  • Responsibilities

    Pharmacy Technician Daily Duties

    Helps health care providers and patients by greeting them in person and by phone; answering questions and requests; referring inquiries (that can not be answered by a certified pharmacy technician) to the pharmacist.

    Maintains pharmacy inventory by checking pharmaceutical stock to determine inventory level; anticipating needed medications and supplies; placing and expediting orders; verifying receipt; removing outdated drugs monthly.

    Maintains a safe and clean pharmacy by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations including but not limited to dusting and wiping all pharmacy shelves, counters, computers and all pharmacy equipment on a daily basis.

    Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.

    Protects patient’s HIPAA information.

    Organizes medications for pharmacist to dispense by reading medication orders and prescriptions; preparing labels; calculating quantities; preparing final packages for pharmacist to verify and bag the medications for patients pick up.

    Calling patients to verify patient’s medical conditions, allergies and insurance information and communicating the status of their prescription through out the process.

    Documenting all communication notes with patient, insurance and pharmacy staff in regards to patient’s prescription.

    Maintains records by recording and filing physicians' orders and prescriptions daily.

    Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.

    Contributes to team work by helping other departments when help is needed.

    Calling insurance companies to resolve any rejections/prior authorizations during the prescription processing time, communicating with the patient all the time, work with the doctor’s office and work with manufacturers patient’s assistance programs to assist patients in accordance with state and federal regulations.

    Clean and organize pharmacy and take trash out of the pharmacy on a daily basis before closing the pharmacy.

    Contact doctor’s offices or hospitals to clarify prescription information

    Answer incoming calls and answer patient questions and address customer service issues when they arise

    Performing inventory audits and purchasing supplies and medication.

    Accepting written prescriptions or refill requests from patients and evaluating information for completeness and accuracy.

    Recording medical histories while maintaining confidentiality and compliance with HIPAA regulations.

    Delivering quality customer service to patients, responding to inquiries, questions, or requests, and referring them to the pharmacist for medical information.

    **** What pharmacy technician is prohibited to do by law is:

    Perform the final check of the prescriptions

    Perform counselling with the patients – you can not give them any advice related to drugs or health-related issue. This has to be done by the pharmacist.
