    We currently have an opening for a LABORATORY ASSISTANT in the lab of Dr. Michael Brainard at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Brainard’s lab investigates the neural mechanisms that enable learning, and how those mechanisms differ across individuals and over the life span to give rise to variation in the capacity for learning. As a model, he uses behavioral, neurophysiological and genetic approaches to study vocal learning in songbirds. This role will be helping to support the science of the lab through assisting with general lab maintenance – such as glass washing, cage maintenance, and cleaning throughout the lab.

    This is a part-time role, totaling approximately 15-20 hours/week.

    PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Collect, wash, and return laboratory glassware and other supplies to stock
    • Maintain a clean orderly work area within the laboratory
    • Prepare and change water bottles, food cups and cage trays to help maintain laboratory animal colony
    • Participate in maintaining lab inventory and ordering of materials
    • Prepare solutions according to established protocols
    • Other duties as required

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    • High School degree or equivalent technical training.
    • College level science courses or equivalent experience.
    • Prior practical experience with techniques described above.
    • Strong enthusiasm for developing new skills and expertise.
