    Job Description

    SUMMARY : The Graduate Assistant (GA) for Student Engagement is a part-time, 20 hour a week, live‐in position responsible for learning and applying skills and knowledge related to providing exceptional programming to the campus community. The GA learns and applies knowledge to enrich the co-curricular experience of students at Queens University of Charlotte.

    The successful candidate must be currently enrolled as a full-time graduate student at Queens University of Charlotte. This GA role includes tuition remission for up to three (3) courses per semester, including summer, while actively serving in the GA role. GAs are required to live on-campus and must sleep and live-in the assigned GA room and building. Because this a mandatory live-in position it includes a rent-free, one-bedroom, furnished on-campus apartment with water, electricity, cable, internet, and free on-site laundry. On-campus apartments are pet/ and partner-friendly. In addition, GAs are provided a free campus dining plan during the academic year, free on-campus parking, and free membership to Queens Fitness Center. GAs enjoy flexible scheduling. Time away must be coordinated in advance with the GA’s immediate supervisor.

    The GA is recognized as a University Official and represents the university and the department on and off university property. Under the supervision of the Associate Director for Student Engagement, the GA position begins on July 5, 2023. There is no expressed or implied commitment to a paid position upon completion of the internship.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    As a GA, you will learn and apply knowledge and skills in the following areas:

    Programming:

    • Learn and assist in strategic planning of campus-wide programming, in conjunction with the Assistant Dean of Student Engagement
    • Learn and host at least one program a semester in collaboration with campus partners
    • Learn and coordinate communication and marketing of Student Engagement programs
    • Learn and build and advise the Commuter Club
    • Learn and advise one Campus Union Board sub-committees
    • Learn and create ways to increase student engagement (through marketing, etc)
    • Learn and attend and manage day of show operations for assigned events

    Weekends and On-Call Rotations:

    • The GA learns and applies their knowledge to serve in an on-call duty rotation responding to student crises and emergencies. This necessitates the GA being on-campus and available on nights and weekends and within 15 minutes of campus when serving as the staff member on-call
    • Due to the nature of this role, the GA is required to live on-campus and must live in the assigned room and building
    • GAs are considered mandatory reporters under Title IX and the Clery Act
    • GAs are expected to abide by and report violations of all local, state, and federal laws and regulations
    • GAs are expected to assist with residential move-in and closing of the residence halls

    Experience, Knowledge & Skills Required

    • Currently enrolled in a graduate program at Queens University of Charlotte
    • Campus involvement and experience that demonstrates interest in Student Affairs/Student Activities/Residence Halls is highly desirable
    • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusion
    • Experience that demonstrates sensitivity and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of first-generation college students
    • Remain calm, cool and collected in time of crisis
    • Exceptionally strong communication skills (verbal, written, interpersonal, presentation) and ability to quickly establish and maintain strong rapport with a diverse student body, as well as throughout the university
    • Ability to mediate problems, situations, and enforce policies
    • Effective community development and programming experience
    • Possess leadership skills and the ability to work effectively within teams
    • Ability to maintain confidential information in a professional manner

    Work Conditions

    • Must be willing and able to work a flexible schedule to meet requirements of the internship, including early mornings, nights, and weekends.

    • This internship has deadlines, may have multiple interruptions, and can be stressful.
