    Job Description

    SUMMARY : The Graduate Assistant (GA) for Residence Life & Housing (RL&H) is a part-time, 20 hour a week, 10‐month, live‐in position responsible for learning and applying skills and knowledge related to the effective management of an undergraduate residence hall. As a member of the RL&H team, the GA learns to create an environment within which students develop skills required for academic excellence, self‐responsibility, cultural awareness, and social interaction. The GA learns and applies knowledge in facilitating student development through individual student interactions, and establishing community within a residence hall. The GA learns to conduct one‐on‐one and full staff meetings with Resident Assistants and assists with hall programming and events. The GA also serves in an on‐call duty rotation to learn how to intervene in emergency and crisis situations and plays a critical role in learning how to facilitate the student judicial process.

    The successful candidate must be currently enrolled as a full-time graduate student at Queens University of Charlotte. This GA role includes tuition remission for up to three (3) courses per semester, including summer, if actively serving in the graduate assistant role. GAs are required to live on-campus and must sleep and live-in the assigned GA room and building. Because this a mandatory live-in position it includes a rent-free, one-bedroom, furnished on-campus apartment with water, electricity, cable, internet, and free on-site laundry. On-campus apartments are pet and partner-friendly. In addition, GHDs are provided a free campus dining plan during the academic year, free on-campus parking, and free membership to Queens Fitness Center. Graduate Assistants enjoy flexible scheduling. Time away must be coordinated in advance with the GA’s immediate supervisor.

    The GA is recognized as a University Official and represents the university and the department on and off university property. Under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Residence Life, the GA position begins on July 5, 2023. There is no expressed or implied commitment to a paid position upon completion of the internship.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    As a GA, you will learn and apply knowledge and skills in the following areas:

    Supervision:

    • Learn to directly supervise 4-6 Resident Assistants
    • Learn to provide on-going support, training, and development to student staff through bi-weekly 1:1 meeting
    • Learn to evaluate all in-hall student staff and collaborate with staff to develop action plans for growth
    • Learn and participate in bi-weekly 1:1 meeting with the Assistant Director of Residence Life and Housing
    • Learn and participate in weekly department meetings, including Residence Life meetings and Team meetings
    • Learn and assist in the recruitment, selection, and training of student staff

    Community Development:

    • Learn to facilitate the development of a positive and inclusive residence hall community
    • Develop meaningful connections with students and staff by being available and visible in the building/complex
    • Learn and assist in consistently enforce University and residence hall regulations through conversations with students, incident reports, and educational sanctioning
    • Learn to serve as hearing officer for cases involving violations of Residence Hall and University policies
    • Learn to mediate resident conflicts as necessary and make appropriate assignment recommendations
    • Learn to conduct wellness checks in collaboration with Campus Police to ensure the well-being of the students

    Administrative and Facility Management:

    • Learn to coordinate and oversee the administrative responsibilities of the building in an accurate and timely manner, including housing room changes, damage billing, community incident reports, conduct paperwork, etc.
    • Attend weekly Residence Life & Housing staff meetings (Wednesdays 10:40-11:40)
    • Establish collaborative relationships with University colleagues, including Division of Student Life staff, the Queens Police Department, Residential Custodial Staff, and Facilities personnel
    • Learn to communicate facility and maintenance issues and share student needs and recommendations
    • Learn and assist with responses to crises, incidents, and facility needs that may arise in your community

    Weekends and On-Call Rotations:

    • GAs learn to be key partners in social, co-curricular, and academic engagement opportunities provided by RL&H. GAs also serve in an on-call duty rotation, where they will learn to respond to student crises and emergencies. This necessitates GAs being on-campus and available on nights and weekends and within 15 minutes of campus when serving as the GA on-call.
    • GAs are considered mandatory reporters under Title IX and the Clery Act.
    • GAs are expected to abide by and report violations of all local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
    • While this is a 20 hours/week position, given the nature of responsibilities, there may be times during the year, such as beginning of term training and the opening and closing of residence halls, when GAs will contribute beyond 20 hours per week.

    Experience, Knowledge & Skills Required

    • Enrolled in a graduate program at Queens University of Charlotte
    • Experience that demonstrates sensitivity and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds of college students
    • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusion
    • Proven ability to quickly learn and apply new skills at an acceptable level of performance.
    • Possess leadership skills and the ability to work effectively within teams
    • Possess effective communication skills to successfully approach people, mediate problems, situations, and enforce policies
    • Easily approachable and able to establish and maintain strong rapport with students
    • Ability to use discretion and exercise good judgment
    • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive student information
    • Effective community development and programming experience
    • Possess effective presentation skills
    • Bachelor’s degree prior to start date

    Work Conditions
