    Job Description

    RESPEC, an employee-owned professional consulting and services company, specializes in applying engineering principles and innovative technologies to solve our clients’ most challenging problems. We are seeking a motivated and talented geotechnical engineer or engineering geologist professional to join our Mining & Energy business unit in our Rapid City, SD, or Lexington, KY, office.

    This position requires a working knowledge of engineering and geology principles to successfully support a range of geotechnical projects with a specific focus on open-pit and underground mine geotechnics. Typical project roles for this position include performing geotechnical core logging, face and heading mapping, and televiewer geophysical logging; preparing and analyzing local and global stability models; characterizing rock and soil materials; installing, operating, and using instrumentation and monitoring equipment; and providing general support for geotechnical and explosives engineering projects. Strong observational and critical-thinking skills will be required daily, and the successful candidate must be willing to travel regularly for fieldwork.

    The successful candidate will support senior-level engineers and geologists with executing geotechnical projects in the mining industry. The ability to execute and deliver on multiple projects simultaneously is required.     Minimum Qualifications:

    • A bachelor of science degree in engineering geology, geological engineering, geotechnical engineering, mining engineering, or a closely related discipline.
    • 0–5 years of experience that includes fieldwork.
    • Strong interest and technical background in mine geotechnics, rock-mass characterization, kinematic analysis, slope and underground excavation stability analysis, field investigations, blasting and explosives engineering, and instrumentation and monitoring.
    • Desire to build foundational field and analysis skills and be mentored by more experienced professionals.
    • Desire to travel and the ability to conduct field investigations in remote locations.
    • Working knowledge of geotechnical field investigations and instrumentation and monitoring methods.
    • Working knowledge of slope and underground excavation stability analysis methods.

    Preferred qualifications:

    • Advanced degree (i.e., master of science or doctorate) in geotechnical or geological engineering or engineering geology.
    • Experience in performing geotechnical core logging.
    • Technical proficiency in open-pit and underground mine modeling software.
    • Direct mine operations experience.

    Compensation: Salary depends on experience and expertise.
