    SUMMARY POSITION STATEMENT:

    Provides temporary care to individuals of all ages (infant to geriatric) who experience developmental disabilities and relief to primary caregivers from the constant responsibility of caring for an individual.

    SECTION III

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

    • Fulfills the role of caregiver or companion to individuals receiving care.
    • Provides basic physical care to meet the particular needs of each individual, assuring their wellbeing in a safe, respectful manner. Duties may include feeding, bathing and dressing, transferring, attending to personal hygiene, operating adaptive equipment, and overseeing self-administered medication as directed by the primary caregiver.
    • Creates and engages individuals in stimulating activities which contribute to their growth and development.
    • Provides transportation to client to and from activities in the community, school, work, etc.
    • Remains sensitive to the needs of the primary caregiver or family members and supportive of their use of respite. Maintains open communication between providers, primary caregiver(s) and family members.
    • Returns phone calls and answers messages from supervisor, case managers, primary caregivers and/or client family members in a timely manner.
    • Represents the agency in a positive manner at all times, especially when in public places with individuals who are receiving services.

    OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Understands and complies with all agency policies and procedures.
    • Conducts self in a professional and responsible manner at all times.
    • Ensures confidentiality as prescribed by agency policy and federal/state law.
    • Maintains and promotes a positive professional working relationship with all employees.
    • Attends and participates in meetings, committees and training as assigned.

    Section IV

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

    Minimum Education: Must be at least 18 years old. High school diploma or equivalent required. CPR and first aid certificates required within 30 days of hire. TB, fingerprint and background check clearance required. 

    Licensure: Alaska driver's license and 1 years of driving experience HIGHLY PREFERRED.  Positions may not be available for applicants unable to provide transportation to clients.  Auto insurance per agency standards.

    Minimum Experience:  Prior experience providing care to persons with disabilities, children, or the elderly preferred, but not required.  Education in developmental disabilities or a related field applicable to experience.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

    • Strong organization, documentation, and time management skills.
    • Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
    • Must be flexible.
    • Detail oriented with the ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
    • Effective problem-solving skills. 
    • Ability to communicate with the recipient to whom s/he is assigned and with his or her supervisor and case managers.

    Physical Requirements: Dependent on client.  Work may occur in client's home or in the community.  May need to assist clients in various recreational activities.  May involve lifting and transferring. 

    Working Conditions:  Work is primarily performed in the community or in the client's home.
