    Position Overview:

    The RN Resident provides comprehensive, patient-focused care for individuals recovering from surgical procedures or with complex medical needs on the progressive surgical unit. This position is designed for newly graduated nurses, combining direct hands-on training with mentorship to enable confident, expert nursing practice.     • Work Schedule:
      • Full-Time: 36 hours/week (12-hour variable shifts)
      • Part-Time: 24 hours/week (12-hour variable shifts)

    Qualifications

    • Education: Graduation from an accredited nursing program (BSN preferred)
    • Licensure:
      • Current Washington State RN license (upon hire)
      • BLS certification (AHA) upon hire
    • Preferred:
      • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
      • National certification in a surgical or critical care nursing specialty area.
    • Experience: ≤12 months RN experience
    • Soft Skills:
      • Strong clinical assessment and documentation skills.
      • Adaptability and resilience in fast-paced clinical environments.
      • Empathy, teamwork, and patient advocacy.
      • Priority-setting and effective communication with patients, families, and health teams.
      • Manual dexterity and ability to lift or move moderate weights as needed for patient care tasks.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Perform comprehensive patient assessments, documentation, and care planning in the Progressive Surgical Unit.
    • Administer medications, wound care, and therapeutic interventions per clinical protocols.
    • Monitor complex, acute, and recovering surgical patients for changes or complications.
    • Collaborate with physicians, therapists, and interdisciplinary health teams to deliver holistic care.
    • Educate patients and families regarding recovery, care expectations, and discharge planning.
    • Adhere to regulatory requirements, infection control, and hospital best practices.

    Physical Examination Responsibilities:

    • Conduct and document frequent patient vital signs, physical examinations, and functional assessments.
    • Identify emerging complications and respond appropriately in accordance with team protocols.

    Medical Oversight Responsibilities:

    • Work under the direct supervision of unit managers and clinical mentors.
    • Communicate patient status and changes promptly to attending physicians and care teams.
    • Participate in training, simulation, and educational sessions as part of residency.
