Job Summary:
The Department of Homeless Services (DHS) is seeking dedicated and compassionate Registered Nurses to serve as Crisis Intervention Nurses at the 24/7/365 Street Homelessness Solutions - Joint Command Center (JCC). This dynamic team responds city-wide to engage and assist individuals experiencing homelessness, performing medical and mental health evaluations in collaboration with outreach teams and city agencies.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct medical, mental health, and safety assessments of homeless individuals on the streets, subways, and in parks.
Collaborate with DHS Crisis Coordinators and Outreach Teams during canvassing efforts to build rapport and encourage individuals to accept services or shelter.
Identify individuals requiring immediate medical or psychiatric care and initiate appropriate interventions.
Evaluate and assess mental health conditions to determine risk of harm to self or others and initiate emergency response as needed under Section 9.58 of the Mental Hygiene Law.
Coordinate with law enforcement and transport teams for safe hospital transfers when necessary.
Provide direct medical attention in field or office settings.
Initiate and complete required clinical documentation and maintain timely and accurate records.
Communicate and collaborate with C.P.E.P. clinicians and hospital staff regarding treatment recommendations.
Obtain and maintain approval as a clinician authorized to operate on a mobile crisis outreach team (DOHMH approval).
Required Qualifications:
Active New York State RN License (with Primary Source Verification)
AHA BLS Certification (Basic Life Support)
At least 2 years of experience in mental health and/or behavioral health
Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
Experience working with vulnerable or underserved populations preferred
Preferred Skills:
Training or coursework in mental and behavioral health
Calm, compassionate demeanor with strong crisis intervention skills
Ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team
Willingness to travel across all NYC boroughs
