    Specific Job Title: Associate Head Coach & Recruiting Coordinator – Women’s Basketball

    Job Summary:

    The Associate Head Coach for Women’s Basketball will support the needs of the Head Coach while being responsible for providing leadership, innovative vision and strategic planning for the St. John’s women’s basketball team, an NCAA Division I member institution, part of the BIG EAST Conference.

    The Associate Head Coach will be responsible for the recruitment, supervision, evaluation and performance of the student-athletes on the women’s basketball team and perform all other duties normally associated with an Associate Head Coach for a Division I intercollegiate women’s basketball program, included but not limited to: selection of team members, development of player relationships, on-court coaching and instruction and position assignment of players, opponent scouting and film breakdown.

    The Associate Head Coach will represent the University and the Vincentian Mission of St. John’s, while also emulating the Athletic Department’s “Expect To Win” culture.

    Essential Functions:

    • Devote best efforts and full time, skill and attention to the performance of duties as Associate Head Coach.
    • Report directly to and act and perform to the reasonable satisfaction of the head coach and perform to the reasonable satisfaction of the director of athletics and sports administrator.
    • Manage and coordinate all aspects of the recruitment of future student-athletes, which includes evaluation of prospective student-athletes both nationally and internationally.
    • Assist the head coach with the organizing of the women’s basketball program, including helping the head coach manage assistant coaches and women’s basketball support staff.
    • Serve as the lead liaison with the department of student services to enforce the team guidelines in regards to academic development, including but not limited to academic responsibilities such as study hall hours, PTD and missed classtime.
    • Provide direct skill development to student-athletes.
    • Aid and support in on-court coaching and player development.
    • Provide appropriate and effective feedback to the head coach and staff.
    • Develop methods to motivate student-athletes on the court and in the classroom and assist St. John’s in achieving its vision and Vincentian mission while maintaining the athletic department’s “Expect To Win.”
    • Establish and maintain a working knowledge of the NCAA and BIG EAST Conference rules and regulations and St. John’s University policies and procedures. Maintain these operating guidelines, policies and procedures to ensure 100% compliance throughout the calendar year for all personnel associated with the program.
    • Perform duties and responsibilities, and conduct themselves in a manner that reflects positively on St. John's and the Program, as well as the image of both St. John's and the Program with its student-athletes, other students, faculty, staff, and alumni, and that enhances the standing of both St. John's and Employee in the community, recognizing both Employee's unique role as a model for the Program's student athletes and the substantial media attention that will be directed toward St. John's.
    • Maintain a harmonious and professional working relationship with the head coach, the athletic director and his or her staff, the program's assistant coaches, coaches of other University teams, other administrative employees involved with the program, and with the Department of Athletics
    • Maintain appropriate and positive relationships with the media, alumni, and CIVIC groups.

    Supervisory Responsibility:

    This position monitors the student-athletes as members of the coaching staff (assistant coaches, non-coaching positions, graduate assistants) and support staff.

    Work Environment:

    This position operates in a fast-paced professional office environment; This position is required to use standard office equipment such as personal computers, printers, scanners, etc.

    Physical Demands:

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be required to stand and perform duties on the basketball court including but not limited to running, skills work, passing, rebounding, shooting.

    Specific vision abilities required by the employee include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus, etc.

    Environmental Conditions:

    The Women’s Basketball Office is located on the second floor of Taffner Field House. As a result, the employee needs to be able to walk up steps to get to their office.

    This position operates in a professional office environment and is expected to represent the university on the road when traveling and at functional events.

    Position Type/Expected Hours of Work:

    This position is full-time in-person position with varying hours.

    Travel:

    Travel is required as assigned by the Head Coach. Applicant should expect high frequency of travel during the championships season and recruitment periods.

    Required Education and Experience:

    • Bachelor’s degree
    • Coaching Experience at HS, AAU, and or college level
    • Valid Driver’s license
    • Background checks required

    Preferred Education and Experience:

    • Graduate Degree (preferred)
    • Five-plus years coaching or any head coaching experience

    In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual salary range for this position is $176,500 - $200,000. St. John’s University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate’s work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

    This position may be relocated to any of St. John’s University’s physical locations at any time.

    Other Responsibilities: 

    Attention to detail and an eye for quality, along with the ability to grasp and translate technical capabilities into benefits are crucial. The ability to listen to a variety of viewpoints from subject matter experts and then distill down to a single message is a must. This position will need to collaborate closely across the marketing organization, including product marketing, public relations, content and design teams, campaign management, social media and corporate marketing teams to ensure effective and consistent messaging and strategy.
