    PRINCIPAL-SENIOR ENGINEER

     

    THE PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITY OF LAKE COUNTY PUBLIC WORKS IS TO PROVIDE WATER AND SANITARY SEWER SERVICE TO WIDELY DISTRIBUTED PORTIONS OF THE COUNTY. WE OPERATE AND MAINTAIN TWELVE WATER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEMS AND THREE SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANTS.     THE POSITION

     

    The general function of this position will be to preform work of considerable difficulty in reviewing design plans for new sewer and water infrastructure. Projects range from residential connections to developer provided assets and construction of regional facilities. This position will take the lead in reviewing connection (system impact) fees and enforcing the Lake County Code. This individual will work closely with a team of engineers and engineering technicians. This position also answers engineering calls and questions related to permits, projects, connection fee calculations, reviews, etc. The position is under general direction and supervision may be exercised over consultants and contractors.

     

    Furthermore, the selected individual will become an expert at understanding and reviewing intergovernmental agreements. Technical reading and writing skills will be essential.   The Principal Civil Engineer must have the ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form, with employees, consultants, other agencies, and the general public. The engineer must have thorough knowledge of civil engineering principles, the ability to organize project documentation, to schedule and conduct meetings, gather, organize, and analyze data or information related to the assigned projects, review development plans for code conformance, and summarize technical information concisely for public consumption.  

     

    As a secondary role, this individual will direct and perform a variety of complex engineering and project management assignments related to water distribution and sanitary sewer infrastructure. This position is responsible for performing technical work in connection with the investigation, review, planning, design, construction and maintenance of various aspects of Public Works infrastructure improvements. This individual will manage preliminary and final design projects and review pay estimates and invoices.

    THE IDEAL CANDIDATE

     

    The ideal professional background and qualifications for the Public Works Principal Engineer include:

     

    • Knowledge of complex Engineering functions.

    • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of Civil Engineering.

    • Considerable knowledge of operation and maintenance of water and wastewater facilities and equipment.

    • Considerable knowledge of Local, State and Federal rules, regulations, and standards governing the operations of water and wastewater facilities.

    • Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions associated with water and wastewater facility operations.

    • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form, with employees, consultants, other agencies, and the general public. 

    • Ability to organize project documentation, to schedule and conduct meetings, gather, organize, and analyze data or information related to the assigned projects, manage preliminary and final design projects, review pay estimates and invoices, review development plans for code conformance, and summarize technical information concisely for public consumption.

     

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

     

    Interested candidates should minimally possess the following education and experience:

     

    • A Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Environmental, Construction or Municipal Engineering is required;
    • Five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in the design, construction, or operation of public water supplies, sanitary sewer systems and/or water reclamation facilities;
    • Possess a Engineer In Training (EIT) license from the State of Illinois or equivalent;
    • Possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license from the State of Illinois or equivalent is desirable;
    • Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record;
    • Or any combination of education and experience that provides the candidates possesses the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties prescribed to the position (above).

      

     

    COMPENSATION

     

    Lake County is offering a competitive salary (hiring range is from $76,688 TO $98,376 +/- (K9) commensurate with experience) along with an excellent and comprehensive benefits package. We also offer flexible working hours, and a comprehensive wellness and training program.
