    An ASSOCIATE SCIENTIST position is available in the Conrad Prebys Center for Chemical Genomics.  The protein production group, led by Dr. Bobkov, works on a diverse portfolio of projects with SBP PIs and other collaborators.  The group deploys a variety of protein expression formats, and provides a suite of protein analysis services. As a part of the Prebys Center multidisciplinary team, the candidate will carry out projects in small-molecule drug discovery.

    The Associate Scientist will perform job responsibilities, mainly project-driven and focused on recombinant protein production in variety of expression systems, protein purification from biological samples and protein analysis, with minimal supervision. The candidate will receive mentorship and guidance when needed from the supervisor, interact with other teams within the Prebys Center as needed.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Designs and performs experiments and procedures requiring specific or technical knowledge and laboratory techniques with minimal input from supervisor
    • Performs bacterial and eukaryotic cell culture, generates and maintains stable cell lines, carries protein cloning, purification and characterization.
    • Independently generates and analyzes biochemical data, presents results in a concise way, and makes suggestions for next logical steps
    • Troubleshoots and provides input on possible solutions
    • Assists with the preparation of reports for pertinent projects
    • Accurately documents own experiments in lab notebook (including tables, graphs, etc.) and/or Prebys Center-specific software (e.g. CBIS)
    • Presents work to supervisor, lab and and/or project meetings
    • Trains less experienced team members as needed
    • Maintains infrastructure of laboratory as required

    Required Skills Required Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline such as biology, chemistry, or pharmacology or related field and three years’ experience in drug discovery or applied laboratory research (e.g. cell-based assay development, including strong experience with biochemical assays and mammalian cell culture) required, or:
      • Master’s degree in a scientific discipline such as biology, chemistry, or pharmacology or related field and one-year experience in drug discovery or applied laboratory research (e.g. protein production, including strong experience with biochemical assays and mammalian cell culture) preferred
    • Must have demonstrated experience in protein expression and purification
    • Experience with eukaryotic (insect and/or mammalian) cell culture, cell transfection/transformation, recombinant virus generation, stable cell lines creation and propagation is required.
    • Practical knowledge of eukaryotic (insect and mammalian, viral and none-viral) and bacterial expression systems, protein expression and purification, chromatography, protein characterization and molecular cloning is strongly preferred.
