    Job Description

    SUMMARY

    The Radiation Oncology Nurse (RON)/Primary Care Nurse (PCN), is responsible and accountable for the direct and indirect nursing care of patients treated with radiation therapy in the Biederman Radiation Department. The ability to present accurate information in a written, auditory or visual fashion is essential. The RON is responsible for patient education, physical assessment, assisting physicians with exams and procedures, being an advocate for patients and their families and collaborating with the health care team regarding pertinent information necessary for the care of patients. The RON encompasses evidence based care and follows OCN standards of care when providing care to patients and their families.

    ORGANIZATION

    Under the direction of the Radiation Medical Director, Radiation Oncology Manager, Director of Nursing and Practice Administrator of CFCC, provide clinical support to Medical Assistants, Radiation Therapists, Intake Specialist or any part of the Radiation Oncology team.

    SPECIFIC DUTIES

    1. Supports the Mission, Vision and Values of Munson Healthcare.

    3. Promotes personal and patient safety.
    4. Uses effective customer service/interpersonal skills at all times.
    5. Performs direct patient care and implements the radiation oncologist’s orders.
    6. Patient liaison for inside and outside resources and identifies the need for referral to support services.
    7. Responsible for systematically assessing the health care needs of patient’s plan of care, implementation and evaluation throughout the course of treatment.
    8. Coordinates care of patients and directs assistive personnel in order to provide safe, effective, efficient, equitable and timely patient centered care.
    9. Communicates effectively in the exchange of information with other health professionals to determine health care needs of both patients and families.
    10. Assess the patient’s ability to learn and provide health related material and education for patients and families on radiation treatment, side effects and management.
    11. Prepares equipment and assists physician with examinations and brachytherapy procedures.
    12. Triage patients for the need of emergent care.
    13. Track and manage tests ordered during course of treatment.
    14. Administer medications as prescribed by the physician.
    15. Attend meetings for process and development, maintain continuing education and required certifications.
    16. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

    ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

    BCLS

    Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Michigan in good standing.

    Minimum of 2 years of oncology experience required.

    Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification within 2 years of hire.

    For those hired into an RN position prior to January 1, 2009, it is encouraged to obtain a BSN. For those hired into an RN position after January 1st, 2009, it is required to obtain a BSN within 10 years of start date. For those hired into an RN position after January 1st, 2015, it is required to obtain a BSN within 5 years of start date.
