    MAJOR FUNCTION:  The High Liability Training Coordinator is housed within the Florida Public Safety Institute in Havana, FL. and reports directly to the Director, Certification Programs.  This position will manage the daily operations of a diverse and highly sophisticated weapons complex and provides instruction on firearms topics and weapons use. Duties will include, but are not limited to:

     

    • Manage the daily operation of a diverse and highly sophisticated weapons complex accessible seven days per week and 24 hours per day that includes B21E and Bulls eye turning target ranges, computer operated reactionary steel target ranges, rifle/sniper ranges, tactical and less-lethal weapons range, a laser Range 2000 Firearms Simulator, a rappelling tower/elevated firing range, and explosive ordinance ranges.

    • Instruct firearms topics and weapons use in law enforcement and corrections Basic Recruit Courses, In-Service training programs, approved Advanced and Specialized training programs, and tactical programs.

    • Coordinate high liability curricula and instruction offered at the Academy to assure safety and consistency of instruction.

    • Develop and implement advanced and tactical lethal and less-lethal weapons training programs, and ensure that training meets all Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC), Department of Education, and College Requirements.

    • Select, review, and evaluate adjunct instructors to teach in Basic Recruit and In-Service training programs and make recommendations for adjunct instructor development.

    • Perform Armorer duties to ensure Academy-owned weapons are properly and safely functioning during all training activities and that weapon systems used by the thirty agencies served by the Academy are safely and properly functioning during use on the firearms ranges.

    • Prepare and submit budget requests, acquire and account for all items that are budgeted to firearms and weapons training programs.

    • Manage the Academy weapons vault containing revolvers, semi-automatic pistols, shotguns, rifles, and fully automatic weapons to assure the security of those weapons.

    • Develop and maintain routine contact with local, state, and federal public safety organizations, and ensure they are being served in the most efficient and effective manner.

    • Ensure that range use records and that the recruit course records are kept to meet CJSTC and College requirements.

     

     

    MINIMUM TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:  Associate Degree in Criminal Justice or related field, and ten years of experience as a certified Law Enforcement Officer, with a Minimum of five years of experience, as a Firearms Instructor.  Equivalent coursework may substitute for the educational requirement.  One additional year of experience as a certified Law Enforcement Officer may substitute for one year of the educational requirement. The required experience as a certified Law Enforcement Officer and certified Firearms Instructor may be concurrent.  Certified as an Armorer, with at least one weapons system, used by the Academy during Basic Recruit Training, or obtain proper certification within one year of hire.   

     

    SUCCESSFUL APPLICANTS WILL DEMONSTRATE THE FOLLOWING: Knowledge of Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) policies and    procedures governing firearms training. Knowledge of de facto professional standards regarding firearms range operation. Knowledge of principles of firearms instruction. Knowledge of state-of-the-art target system design. Knowledge of principles of motor skills development. Knowledge of principles of lethal and less-than-lethal weapon systems. Knowledge of student record keeping principles. Skill in using revolvers, semi-automatic pistols, shotguns, rifles, and fully automatic weapons. Skilled in effectively using advanced target systems. Skilled in using chemical munitions. Skilled in using a computer. Skilled in operating personal computer software: word processing, data bases, spreadsheets. Skilled in operating a motor vehicle. Ability to effectively teach the safe use of revolvers, semi-automatic pistols, shotguns, rifles, and fully automatic weapons. Ability to effectively teach the safe use of chemical and less-than-lethal weapons. Ability to diagnose and remediate shooter deficiencies. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to demonstrate sound judgment. Ability to work independently. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Ability to plan and organize.
