    Realta Fusion is a rapidly growing start-up developing compact magnetic mirror fusion energy systems to address the biggest challenge of our time – tackling global climate change while ensuring a sufficient energy supply for at least ten billion people on (and off) earth. Realta is targeting the need to decarbonize industrial process heat as the fastest path to full-scale deployment of our technology. We are building a team with diverse talents dedicated to making fusion energy a real solution to humanity’s most pressing problem.

    This Mechanical Engineer will work with Realta’s engineering and scientific teams to provide critical engineering and design input on Realta’s technology development roadmap. The Mechanical Engineer will be a critical contributor to BEAM – Realta’s Break-Even class Axisymmetric Mirror – and Realta’s first-of-a-kind fusion pilot plant, HAMMiR.

    Responsibilities

    1. Mechanical design and analysis of fusion energy systems, subsystems, and components.
    2. Thermal hydraulics design and analysis for fusion energy system blankets, and heat flow analysis for functional materials and interfaces.
    3. Neutronics analysis for shielding and activation, shielding optioneering and design.
    4. Interface with plasma physics team and business team to ensure integrated design, development, and deployment of BEAM.
    5. Support technical risk assessment activities, feasibility studies, and technology roadmap development
    6. Develop specifications for sub-systems and interact with external contractors in design and supply of components.
    7. Support manufacturing and testing of key components
    8. Communication: Synthesize and present technical work internally and externally, communicate daily with project teams and leadership to support programmatic needs.
    9. Safety: Contribute to the establishment of company safety standards and lead implementation of these standards within R&D and Engineering team.

    Required Qualifications

    1. Education: MS (+ 3 years experience) or BS (+ 5 years experience) in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
    2. Experience with current CAD software tools (SolidWorks, Creo, etc.) and CFD software (COMSOL, Ansys, etc.) required. Ability to carry out neutronics analysis (e.g. with MCNP or OpenMC) desirable.
    3. Collaboration: Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills (written, verbal, public presentation) to collaborate effectively with colleagues, external partners, and stakeholders.
