We are seeking a skilled and compassionate Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Registered Nurse to join our dynamic healthcare team. As a PCU nurse, you will care for patients who require close monitoring and advanced nursing interventions while transitioning between intensive care and medical-surgical levels of care.
The PCU Registered Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to adult patients with complex medical conditions. These patients often require continuous cardiac monitoring, frequent assessments, and timely clinical interventions. The nurse will collaborate closely with physicians, advanced practice providers, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure safe, effective, and coordinated care.
This position offers flexible scheduling options to support work-life balance, including day, night, and rotating shifts depending on unit needs. Flexible start dates are available, allowing candidates to begin employment at a time that works best for their personal and professional commitments.
PCU nurses typically care for patients recovering from cardiac events, respiratory compromise, sepsis, post-operative procedures, or those requiring titratable medications and continuous monitoring. Patient ratios may be as high as 1:5 , depending on acuity, shift, and staffing guidelines. Nurses are supported by charge nurses, resource nurses, and ancillary staff to promote safe workloads and quality care.
Perform thorough patient assessments, including continuous cardiac and hemodynamic monitoring
Administer medications, IV drips, and treatments according to physician orders and evidence-based protocols
Recognize and respond quickly to changes in patient condition, escalating care when necessary
Utilize critical thinking skills to develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans
Accurately document all patient care, assessments, and interventions using the Epic electronic medical record (EMR) system
Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapists, case managers, and other healthcare professionals
Educate patients and families on diagnoses, treatment plans, medications, and discharge instructions
Maintain compliance with hospital policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements
Participate in unit-based quality improvement initiatives and professional development opportunities
This unit utilizes Epic EMR , and nurses are expected to document accurately and efficiently in real time. Familiarity with Epic is preferred, but training will be provided as needed to ensure confidence and competence with documentation workflows.
The PCU is a collaborative, team-oriented environment focused on patient safety and clinical excellence. Nurses are required to wear blue scrub uniforms , promoting a professional and consistent appearance across the unit.
Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in good standing
Minimum of 1 year of acute care experience preferred; PCU, telemetry, or step-down experience strongly desired
Current BLS certification required; ACLS preferred or required within a designated timeframe
Strong clinical assessment, communication, and time-management skills
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity setting
