    The Position

    What describes the RTAA's Accounting Technician? Under general supervision, performs technical accounting and financial record keeping and reporting activities in support of assigned accounting systems, functions, or program areas. This work involves preparing, reviewing, processing, and maintaining financial transactions, records, and reports for accounts payable, and accounts receivable; providing technical accounting assistance to the Manager of Accounting and Finance leadership; and performing related duties and responsibilities as assigned. Incumbents are expected to perform this work with a high degree of independence, in an accurate and timely manner, and in accordance with legal requirements and sound financial management principles and practices.

    Primary Responsibilities/Essential Duties

    • Review, analyze, balance, and reconcile general ledger accounts and other accounting transactions based on the interpretation and application of accounting theories, principles, and practices; identify and resolve problems.
    • Utilize computer programs and database systems to enter, post, verify, and retrieve a wide variety of routine to complex accounting and financial data, reports, and information.
    • Compile and distribute required reports; research and resolve errors. This may require interfacing with other departments and customers.
    • Verify the accuracy and completeness of accounting data and documents, review the general ledger accounts, journals, and subsidiary accounts affected. Determine the journal entries required to bring accounts into balance and complete monthly accruals.
    • Research, collect, compile, and analyze information from various sources; identify alternatives, make, and justify recommendations.
    • Maintain and provide oversight for all accounts payable to ensure prompt, timely, and accurate payments; communicate both verbally and in writing with vendors and staff to resolve discrepancies.
    • Receive and review invoices, resolve discrepancies, verify GL coding information for proper charging to departments' budget; and prepare for payment following RTAA approval policies and procedures. Develop spreadsheets for the tracking of payments and due dates. Reconcile all statements monthly.
    • Issue year-end 1099 forms and reports; perform fiscal year end reconciliations.

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

    • Knowledge of principles, practices, and terminology of general accounting, including financial statement preparation and methods of financial control and reporting.
    • Knowledge of automated accounting systems, preferably including knowledge of RTAA's general accounting and associated financial systems, practices, and procedures.
    • Ability to apply analytical methods, including computer applications to identify and reconcile errors, prepare, and maintain accurate and timely accounting records and reports.
    • Ability to communicate.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Education: High School Diploma or GED. An equivalent combination of experience and training may be considered.
    • Experience: Three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in working with accounts payable, and/or receivable accounting record systems, financial worksheets, and interpreting financial and accounting data.
    • Licensing: Possession of a valid Driver's License; ability to obtain and maintain eligibility to hold a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge.

    Selection Procedure :

    Review of Application: After submission, the application will be reviewed to determine if it is complete and if minimum qualifications are met.     Interview Process: Based on the application evaluation process, only the most qualified applicants will be considered for an interview. The interview process may include an initial panel interview, followed by subsequent assessment exercises to demonstrate the ability to perform job-related tasks and/or employment interviews with other RTAA personnel.
