    Why Renoster

Renoster is a carbon credit ratings agency focused on bringing deep transparency to the nature-based Voluntary Carbon Markets.

We see a problem: Many nature-based carbon projects today are very low quality. Major news outlets and research papers have shown that many carbon credits aren’t genuinely offsetting anything. This means that millions of tonnes of carbon has gone into the atmosphere and not really been dealt with. Money is not being properly used to genuinely restore and conserve natural ecosystems, and one of humanity’s best tools for fighting climate change is being hampered.

Our solution is simple: sunlight is the best disinfectant. We’re a deeply mission-driven company with a no-nonsense, tell-all, attitude towards carbon offsets. Our goal is to describe which projects are doing things well and which aren’t; and then make our work public so that the world can benefit by knowing which carbon credits to support. We want to clean up the carbon industry through deep transparency; because the only way that humanity is going to make a dent in climate change is if nature is given a chance, and if people can trust in their carbon offsets.

    Who We’re Looking For

The Renoster team is looking for passionate mission-driven individuals who share our goals of bringing greater transparency to the carbon markets.

For this role we are looking for a team member with a strong background in forest science and policy and/or carbon protocols as well as a passion for educating people on these topics. Our goal for the position is to assist Renoster in creating state-of-the-art methodologies for evaluating carbon offset projects, and then teach our customers and the public about these approaches. The candidate will help us tackle heady forestry topics such as reverse leakage and tonne-year accounting discounts.

We must acknowledge that the carbon market has some major flaws. Carbon offset projects often rely on faulty assumptions to quantify elements such as additionality, baselines, leakage, and permanence. Our mission is to address those flaws and provide a standard for quality, and then to identify projects that are the highest quality for the world to support. Only in addressing these problems in a head-on and transparent way will we fix the carbon markets and ultimately help fight climate change.

    Responsibilities include:

    • Developing methodologies for evaluating carbon offset projects (Primary).
    • Convey findings and complex forest science concepts to the public (Primary).
      • Help educate the public on these topics to describe our methodology and findings.
      • Create science content describing our methods (technical and non-technical writing).
      • Travel to conferences several times per year.
    • Product management and scoping (Primary).
      • Help us identify the areas of most useful research and reach those goals.
      • Engage with Renoster’s science team to help build out science products for forest carbon projects.
    • Partnership development (Secondary).
      • Help us identify useful research and product partners (not sales).

    Desired Skills:

    • Strong experience and understanding of carbon markets, forest policy, and carbon offset protocols.
      • A strong understanding of complex carbon offset topics/challenges such as leakage, tonne-year accounting, additionality, and dynamic baselines.
    • Communications skills
      • A passion for educating people on complex forestry topics.
      • A technical or science writing proficiency.
    • Product management skills.
      • The ability to take on complex projects and manage teams to achieve those goals.

    Nice to haves:

    • A Master’s or PhD in forest science or related field, and several years experience with the voluntary forest carbon markets
      • Knowledge of many of the criticisms that have been leveled at the industry.
      • Scientific literacy.
    • A passion for improving the industry and doing forest conservation better.
    • Some programming and statistical experience might be helpful.
    • The position is remote, but a +/- 4 hour window from Pacific Standard Time is desirable.
