The Department of Molecular Metabolism (MET) at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (SPH) conducts pioneering research into the causes of underlying complex human disorders. The Harvard Chan Advanced Multi-omics Platform (ChAMP) in the Department of Molecular Metabolism at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health is focused on promoting collaboration and supporting the advancement of research. The platform aims to provide mass spectrometry support and partnership to collaborators from both Harvard Schools and external institutions and facilitates user training and education of mass spectrometry methodology and analysis. The Research Assistant will hold an integral role within the platform – not only taking on the administrative duties involved in running the platform, but also supporting and participating in the science. The Research Assistant will also be part of a research lab, participating in scientific projects and all other aspects of lab life. This is an opportunity to get trained on mass spectrometry, analytical chemistry, and metabolic research. A successful candidate will be highly organized, with excellent communication skills and a keen eye for detail.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Coordinate ordering and organization of supplies and reagents for the platform; Undertake other clerical and simple accounting duties under the direction of administrative personnel
• Ensure adequate maintenance of mass spectrometry systems (e.g., routine cleaning and calibration of equipment, coordinating equipment repair and service)
• Handle and process biological samples for mass spectrometry analysis; process, organize and summarize data
• Work closely with a team of researchers in support of projects; Perform laboratory experiments utilizing specific and prescribed techniques and equipment (may use hazardous chemicals)
• Attend department and School meetings as needed (e.g. journal clubs, seminars, and lab meetings)
• Communicate and coordinate with various department and school administrative personnel on issues related to the platform

PLEASE NOTE: **** This position has a term appointment of one year from date of hire with the possibility of extension. The finalist will be required to pass an occupational health screening.

Physical Requirements:

• May be required to lift, move, and transport related laboratory equipment
• May be required to work with a variety of hazardous materials

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

• 1+ years of related work experience required; a combination of education and experience may be considered

Additional Qualifications and Skills: The following job-specific skills and competencies are preferred:

• Bachelor's degree in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, or other biological sciences
• Passion in scientific research is highly preferred
• Solid knowledge of analytical chemistry and biochemistry
• Prior experience working with mass spectrometers a strong plus
• Candidate must be self-motivated, energetic and able to work in a diverse laboratory environment
• Knowledge of standard safety regulations and appropriate laboratory practices applying to research in biology and biochemistry; demonstrated ability to engage others effectively in learning and applying appropriate practices
• Excellent organizational, communication, computer and record-keeping skills
• Attention to detail
• Knowledge of computer and MS office software, as well as Mac software

• Standard Hours/Schedule: 35 hours per week
