Your Role and Responsibilities

IBM is seeking a Research Scientist to work at its T. J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, NY.

You will work in the area of AI accelerator design by developing agile Register-Transfer-Level (RTL)/Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) generation (and optimization) from source application code, driven by available IP blocks in the design. A non-trivial subset of the design (e.g. the open-source microprocessor such as RISC-V cores + AI accelerator unit cluster, with ring interconnect) would be chosen for exploration. The ultimate goal would be to determine the near-optimal target micro-architecture for supporting next generation AI/ML application codes (e.g. foundation model programs) – relevant for the AI Hardware design team. For example, the right mix of RISC-V control cores versus AI/ML (accelerator) cores would be quickly determined, and, the benefit of using hardwired control engines over programmable RISC-V cores (from an area and power viewpoint) would be quantified. The agile System-on-Chip (SoC) methodology developed for a suitable AI accelerator chip sub-set could quite possibly help accelerate its chip tape-outs as a short-term benefit. As a longer-term benefit, the agile methodology toolset applied in conjunction with an AI accelerator-relevant System-on-Chip (SoC) design vehicle, would be used for the targeted agile SoC cloud-hosted design toolchain in various IBM research projects. The long-term impact for IBM’s AI Hardware mission would be the ability to drastically reduce development cost via deployment of intelligent automation assists in the design of domain-specific AI/ML accelerator/SoC solutions. Software-hardware co-design principles would ensure drastic reduction of current user-level programmability and energy-efficiency gaps.

A Ph.D. in Computer Science, Engineering or a related area is required.

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

• Integrated Circuit (IC) design experience-1 year
