This position is with MarineQuest, UNCW's marine science outreach program, located in Wilmington, NC. MarineQuest provides young people with opportunities to explore, discover and value our marine habitats. MQ also offers summer and school programs that aim to deliver academically enriching and hands-on, feet-wet experiences for preK-12 youth. To build stewardship among the youth, MQ also provides service-learning opportunities. THE 2021-2022 POSITIONS WILL HAVE A START DATE (FOR NEW FULL-TIME 11 MONTH MEMBERS) OF SEPTEMBER 1ST 2021 AND AN END DATE OF JULY 31ST 2022.

PARTICIPANTS WHO COMPLETE THE PROGRAM WILL RECEIVE A SEGAL EDUCATION AWARD OF $6,345 FROM THE NATIONAL SERVICE TRUST.

PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

To help build communityresiliency in the face of potential climate driven disasters by offeringeducational opportunities for participants to engage in citizen science throughenvironmental monitoring and measurement; and by participating in hands-on learningactivities hosted at community libraries and other centers serving underservedrural counties in Southeastern North Carolina. 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

The Coastal ResiliencyAmbassador position has been designed to deliver knowledge and tools to thecommunity so that its members can develop into and serve as future leaders inconservation and resiliency. It will be the Ambassador’s responsibility to meetall goals presented for the term of service, including performing outreachpresentations, hosting conservation themed workshops, collaborating on thedevelopment of partnership events, organizing and leading citizen sciencetraining initiatives, and collecting data aimed to evaluate the health of NorthCarolina’s coastal wetlands.

QUALIFICATIONS 

-Applicants must be have a college degree in environmental science, marine science, biology, or a related field, and must be at least 21 years of age. -Must be able to work independently as well as a member of a team.

• Must be goal oriented and self-motivated
• Must be comfortable interacting with the public with a positive attitude, and with public speaking
• Possess a deep interest in coastal ecology
• Candidate is anticipated to have regular interaction with citizens of varying socioeconomic backgrounds

Preferred:

• Several years of experience working in education/outreach.
• Familiarity with MarineQuest and its programs
• Experience with citizen science
• Experience developing public events
• Experience with volunteer coordinating/supervision

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS

-The candidate will have to be able to lift at least 40 pounds and be able to walk long distances in the sand/mud/marsh.

• The candidate will have to complete required van training to be granted permission to use University vehicles for travel.
• Candidate will have to be comfortable working in all weather conditions, and potentially will have to get wet/muddy working in marshes.

PREFERRED SCHEDULE

The candidate would need tocomplete an AmeriCorps term of service of 1700 hours in 11 months. This equatesto roughly 40 hours per week. We understand that the candidate will haveobligations outside of the “normal” 8-5 workday based on community programmingand field conditions. On weeks where the candidate does not have evening orweekend obligations, we expect him/her to be in the office for 40 hours. We areflexible as long as the candidate is forthcoming with his/her agenda prior tonot being in the office. They must make every effort to fulfill commitmentsmade to community members, organizations and partners.
