    This position is with Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation, located in Charlotte, NC. Catawba Riverkeeper's mission is to educate and advocate to protect the Catawba-Wateree River Basin’s lakes, rivers and streams for everyone who depends on and enjoys them. THE 2021-2022 AMERICORPS POSITIONS WILL HAVE A START DATE (FOR NEW FULL-TIME 11 MONTH MEMBERS) OF SEPTEMBER 1ST 2021 AND AN END DATE OF JULY 31ST 2022.

    FOR THE 2021-2022 SERVICE YEAR, RESILIENCE CORPS NC OFFERS A LIVING STIPEND OF $17,000 FOR 11 MONTHS, HEALTH INSURANCE REIMBURSEMENT FOR PREMIUMS, CHILDCARE ASSISTANCE, AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES (INDIVIDUAL TRAININGS, ENROLLMENT IN NC ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CERTIFICATE PROGRAM, AND CONFERENCES IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE NC COMMISSION ON VOLUNTEERISM). PARTICIPANTS WHO COMPLETE THE PROGRAM WILL RECEIVE A SEGAL EDUCATION AWARD OF $6,345 FROM THE NATIONAL SERVICE TRUST.

    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION

    The Floating Classroom Coordinator is responsible for coordinating the organization’s educational programs related to the Floating Classroom on Lake Norman. The Floating Classroom is a 12’x38’ tri-toon boat equipped with seating for up to 40 and workstations for experiments and projects. [ML1] In this role, the Floating Classroom Coordinator will plan, oversee, [ML2] and execute the organization’s school and field trip programs, summer camp programs, and family educational programming. These programs will be operated primarily by the Floating Classroom Coordinator and hourly program staff with support from the Education Manager and other staff as needed. The Floating Classroom is housed in Mooresville, NC on Lake Norman. This position will work at The Floating Classroom, remotely, or at the Catawba Riverkeeper offices in McAdenville, NC as appropriate. The Floating Classroom Coordinator will also support other educational efforts of the organization as needed and able. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

    The responsibilities and duties of the Floating Classroom Coordinator will include but may not be limited to the following. Maintain and manage a comprehensive educational program in line with the mission and values of Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation on the Floating Classroom. They will conduct outreach to school and community groups who may be interested in Floating Classroom programs and serve as a resource for questions about those programs. They are responsible for the planning, management, and training necessary for program staff of Floating Classroom programs including educational volunteers. They are expected to develop and maintain all curriculum and program guides and put together content related to Floating Classroom programming for public consumption (videos, blogs, etc). The responsibility of coordinating the scheduling of boat captains and first mates for assistance with Floating Classroom programs will be under their duties. Additionally, the Floating Classroom Coordinator will participate, as appropriate and able, with the organization’s other programmatic efforts.  QUALIFICATIONS 

    Require a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Outdoor Education, Biology, Ecology, Geology, Geography, Education, or a related field. Demonstrated experience in environmental education, teaching, or other education programming for example camp counselor or education internships. Must be pursuing or willing to pursue NC Environmental Educator Certification. Ability to develop and deliver fun, creative, and enjoyable environmental education programs for students of all ages and backgrounds. Ability to deliver both classroom and in the field instruction. Must be willing to work nights and weekends as needed. Must always maintain a valid driver’s license and have reliable personal transportation. Comfort and experience on the water in a kayak is a plus and comfort on a motorized boat is required. 

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Must be able to life at least 35 pounds. The Coordinator will need to occasionally traverse across a variety of terrains (i.e. hiking trails, creek embankments, etc). The position will require the Coordinator to work in a variety of weather conditions outside. 

    PREFERRED SCHEDULE 

    The Catawba Riverkeeper office operates on a flexible work schedule within some parameters. Employees are expected to work 40 hours per week between 8a-6p, Monday-Friday as the employee sees fit. Position responsibilities that fall outside of those normal working windows are common based on the nature of our work and employees are EXPECTED and ENCOURAGED to flex time off of standard work hours when job responsibilities fall on nights and weekends. The Education Coordinator will be responsible for setting his/her own schedule and communicating it with their supervisor.
