    Job Overview

    We are seeking an experienced Retirement & Pension Specialist to administer and oversee retirement and pension programs within a public sector environment. This position is responsible for ensuring accurate benefit calculations, regulatory compliance, employee counseling, and coordination with internal departments, external actuaries, trustees, and third-party administrators.

    The Retirement & Pension Specialist serves as a subject matter expert on defined benefit and/or defined contribution plans, providing guidance to leadership and employees on retirement eligibility, service credit, benefit estimates, and pension-related policies. The role requires advanced analytical skills, strong knowledge of federal and state regulations, and the ability to manage complex retirement cases with precision and confidentiality. Perform other duties as assigned.

    Experience Requirements:

    • Minimum of 7–10 years of progressively responsible experience in retirement, pension administration, or employee benefits administration
    • Extensive experience administering defined benefit and/or defined contribution retirement plans
    • Strong experience interpreting and applying federal and state regulations (e.g., IRS, ERISA, applicable state retirement statutes)
    • Experience calculating retirement benefits, service credits, disability retirements, and survivor benefits
    • Experience conducting retirement counseling sessions and presenting benefit information to employees and leadership
    • Advanced experience analyzing pension data, payroll records, and employment histories for accuracy and compliance
    • Experience working with actuaries, auditors, legal counsel, and third-party administrators
    • Proficiency in HRIS, pension administration systems, and Microsoft Office Suite (advanced Excel skills preferred)
    • Demonstrated ability to handle highly confidential and sensitive financial and employee information

    Experience Preferences:

    • Experience working in a public sector, government, or multi-employer retirement system environment
    • Experience supporting pension board meetings, preparing documentation, and presenting reports
    • Familiarity with Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) reporting requirements
    • Experience assisting with actuarial valuations and annual financial reporting processes
    • Professional certification such as Certified Employee Benefit Specialist (CEBS), Certified Pension Consultant (CPC), or similar credential
    • Experience leading or mentoring benefits or HR staff

    Physical Requirements:

    • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time
    • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds (files, office supplies)
    • Frequent use of hands for typing, filing, and operating office equipment
    • Ability to bend, reach, and walk within an office environment
    • Adequate vision and hearing to perform clerical tasks and interact with staff and the public

    Education Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Finance, Public Administration, Accounting, or a related field

    Education Preferences:

    • Master’s degree in Public Administration, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field
    • Professional certification in employee benefits or pension administration (CEBS, CPC, QPA, or similar)
    • Continuing education in retirement law, pension compliance, or governmental accounting standards
