    Senior Refrigeration Engineer

Our client is revolutionizing how heavy industrial facilities operate; dropping energy consumption, increasing throughput, and cutting emissions in the world's most resource-consuming sectors.

They are doing this by building the first operating system (OS) for heavy industrial facilities. This allows modern complex algorithms to easily interface and control these massive infrastructures from the cloud. We also developed the first applications which run on this OS. These applications use physics-based machine learning to control industrial refrigeration sites across the country, transforming them into electrical grid assets that can trade and respond to electrical grid signals in real-time. Essentially turning dumb facilities into smart ones.

It’s their goal as a company to not only deploy the first industrial facilities operating system but also make a measurable impact on climate change.

    Primary Responsibility:

Have a deep knowledge of Ammonia systems (be the resident subject matter expert in Ammonia refrigeration systems), including control systems, repair/maintenance, operations, startup, design, and electrical configuration. Work with our software and R&D team to build and improve client's products, including improved refrigeration control systems.

Under minimal supervision, work independently, performing installation of electrical equipment and control systems in various “cold storage” warehouses throughout North America, including troubleshooting electrical issues, communicating/teaching with on-site staff,

Provide maintenance support as necessary to ensure operational objectives are met. Other areas of knowledge, including but not exclusive to ammonia refrigeration, mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and PLC programming. Will direct and oversee the work of contractors on occasion.

    Essential Functions:

    • Provides guidance and expertise in Ammonia systems to the R&D and software team.
    • Independently installs new electrical equipment in existing Ammonia refrigeration plants.
    • Identifies and scopes requirements for ammonia system upgrades, including basic cost estimation, technical requirements, and supervision / QA of third party contractors to complete work, as well as associated timeline estimates?
    • Troubleshoots new control systems and communicates issues back to the client's R&D and software teams.
    • Defines and sets up ideal operational settings and parameters for all refrigeration equipment (i.e. superheat, regulators, pressure settings, defrost cycles, determining and recording sensor scaling parameters, etc.) Proactively monitor system performance, and take appropriate actions to ensure that the system is operating optimally.
    • Maintains up to date documentation and reporting.
    • Provides in-depth troubleshooting of refrigeration, electrical, mechanical, and controls systems to root cause and recommends corrective action.
    • Shares knowledge, and assists in the training and development of less experienced technicians/engineers.
    • Performs related work and other job assignments as required.

    Qualifications & Experience:

    •  Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent work experience required
    • Candidates must have hands-on knowledge of Ammonia refrigeration systems.
    • 10+ years of Ammonia refrigeration system experience.
    • Completion of RETA Operator 1 & 2 courses preferred; In lieu of RETA course - successful completion of industry-recognized Industrial Ammonia Refrigeration training (Stellar, Frick, GCAP/Lanier or employer comparable training program), equivalent in scope will be considered
    • RETA CIRO certification preferred
    • Required to successfully complete assigned Industrial Refrigeration and Mechanical-Electrical courses
    • Troubleshooting and repairs with differing control systems Opto22/Allen Bradley etc.
    • Required to be trained in HAZMAT, obtain and maintain the certification
    • Computerized Maintenance Management System experience preferred
    • Basic computer skills required (email, internet searches, basic data entry, etc.)
    • Ability to read and interpret piping, instrumentation diagram (P&ID), and electrical drawings
    • Microsoft Office Suite and/or Google Docs/Sheets knowledge
    • Valid driver’s license and safe driving record.
    • Successful completion of a background check

     Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    •  Fully competent in mechanical knowledge (all level 3 requirements)
    • Requires strong communication and interpersonal skills
    • Basic mathematical and documentation skills necessary
    • Ability to work with hands in mechanically oriented situations
    • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
    • Must be able to work unsupervised
    • Proficient use of testing equipment
    • Ability to work in an ambiguous and fast-paced environment
    • Up to 75% travel, including working outside of normal business hours and weekends

     Physical Requirements:

The physical demands described below are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

    •  May be required to tolerate working environment with inside controlled temperatures of –20 degrees Fahrenheit and outside ambient temperatures (including heat, cold and precipitation)
    • Must be able to work at heights in excess of 35 ft. and be able to access elevated platforms and catwalks
    • Must be able to climb ladders and stairs
