    BILINGUAL ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE ORGANIZER (MONTEREY BAY REGION)

    ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS ON A ROLLING BASIS

    LOCATION: Monterey Bay Area (Santa Cruz, Monterey, and San Benito Counties)

    COMPENSATION: The salary range is $58,000 to $72,000 commensurate with experience, not to exceed $65,000 except for candidates who significantly exceed the experience and other qualifications. This is a salaried, exempt position with long and sometimes irregular hours. This position may include occasional evenings and weekends. This position is full-time with benefits including healthcare and generous time off package.

    Let's Green CA! is part of the Romero Institute, a Santa Cruz-based nonprofit law and policy center with a 50-year legacy of winning justice for the people. Founders Danny Sheehan and Sara Nelson began their work together in the late 1970s, when Sheehan prosecuted the case that effectively ended construction of new nuclear power plants in the United States (Silkwood v. Kerr-McGee).The Romero Institute also houses the Lakota People's Law Project.

    In collaboration with leaders like Dolores Huerta and the Dolores Huerta Foundation, Let's Green CA! is building grassroots support for an equitable clean energy transition that puts frontline communities first. Our Electrify CA! campaign aims to implement change from the ground up to create a healthy, sustainable, carbon-free California. The Let's Green CA! team is seeking a Bilingual Environmental Justice Organizer to lead our outreach, education, and organizing efforts in the Monterey Bay area. 

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Bilingual Environmental Justice Organizer will work with the Let's Green CA! team to build regional support for our Electrify CA! campaign. Responsibilities will include the development and management of educational campaigns regarding the climate, health and financial benefits of home electrification and clean car adoption. This position will also be tasked with deepening our organization's relationships in low-income, Spanish-speaking, and disadvantaged communities in the Monterey Bay Area and building regional support for our statewide policy priorities.

    MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Work with Let's Green CA! leadership to plan and implement community outreach, organizing, and education initiatives in the Monterey Bay area.
    • Identify, recruit and develop community leaders to strengthen our collective grassroots power and effectively influence strategic decision-makers to support climate action efforts and amplify state policy priorities.
    • Create bilingual educational materials regarding the climate, health and financial benefits of home electrification and clean car adoption.
    • Plan, organize, and supervise educational events such as EV car shows and electric stove cooking demonstrations/educational sessions.
    • Strengthen relationships with key partners in Environmental Justice organizations by attending strategic planning meetings, mobilizing turnout for public hearings and showing up for allied events when appropriate.
    • Coordinate and oversee logistics for organizing team meetings and activities.
    • Coordinate and lead programming and training for Let's Green CA! grassroots volunteers.

    Qualifications:

    • A passion for advancing clean energy and phasing out the use of harmful fossil fuels in underrepresented communities;

    • Track record of planning and implementing advocacy campaigns, strategic initiatives or similar efforts with clearly defined goals and objectives;

    • Basic knowledge of environmental justice, climate change, social justice and community organizing principles;

    • Ability to work in collaboration with team members and also work independently and manage multiple priorities, stakeholders and workflows;

    • Demonstrated success leading collaborative campaigns in the social justice and/or environmental/climate/public health space;

    • 3-5 years of relevant experience;

    • Fluency in Spanish;

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with demonstrated work products such as outreach plans, blog posts, articles, and/or social media posts;

    • Demonstrated success engaging and working with people of diverse backgrounds and across a range of genders, incomes, races, and faiths;

    • Successful track record of community outreach towards traditionally underrepresented communities and maintaining positive relationships with community organizations, leaders, members, elected officials and business leaders.
