The Romero Institute — a nonprofit law and policy center at the forefront of social and environmental justice movements — seeks an experienced Environmental Justice Organizer who will work in Stockton and around the San Joaquin Valley to aid our mission for just and progressive environmental solutions.
Our legacy stretches back over 40 years making a difference as advocates for the people. As our Environmental Justice Organizer, you'll help build our Let's Green California program, which operates at the local, regional, and statewide levels to promote effective climate action. In this role, you'll work closely with our leadership team to build local and regional support for statewide climate solutions, including:
- Developing and promoting strategies that place California at the forefront of climate action;
- Identifying and developing fellow climate leaders in communities throughout the San Joaquin Valley;
- Educating and mobilizing a diverse coalition of people — specifically inclusive of Latinx communities — in support of dedicated, local climate action and progressive statewide policy.
Our ideal candidate will:
- Be bilingual (English-Spanish);
- Demonstrate a fierce commitment to social, economic, racial, and climate justice;
- Be a people-person, passionate about fostering genuine working relationships based on trust and solidarity with a diverse array of partners;
- Be highly proactive, taking initiative on projects from conception to completion;
- Show the ability to juggle projects, deadlines, meetings, and relationships with key stakeholders;
- Excellent organizational, writing, and verbal skills, with the ability to observe and be political in all communications;
- Have at least five years experience working for a community, labor, or environmental organization;
- Conduct group and one-on-one educational sessions with community leaders, elected officials and staffers, and external partners on a consistent and regular basis;
- Provide regular organizing training for community members in the principles and strategies of community organizing
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree or three to five years of relevant experience;
- A passion to address the climate crisis and environmental justice issues faced by Latinx communities;
- Prior work with senior-level executives, preferably in a nonprofit environment, to develop and execute plans and campaigns;
- Ability to see the big picture and think strategically while executing tactical tasks;
- High energy and relentless positivity; team-oriented, motivated, flexible, and attentive to detail
- Exceptional interpersonal and relationship building skills;
- Knowledge of environmental justice, public health, and climate policy;
- Embraces work with low- and moderate-income people and communities of color

The Romero Institute is committed to maintaining a safe and secure work environment during the pandemic. Compensation commensurate with experience and qualifications, with annualized salary ranging from $56,000 to $66,000. The Romero Institute provides healthcare and a generous time off package.
