    The role of Architectural Designer at Roto is to realize exhibition designs and installations for museums, zoos, aquariums, brand destinations and custom outdoor play elements. The position provides implementation design and technical coordination at the interface of custom exhibit features and the buildings/sites which house them, solving design problems and managing communications between Roto’s in-house designers and engineers, it’s subcontractors and suppliers, and a project’s building architects and general contractors. This is a versatile and highly-collaborative position that may involve producing detail drawings for exhibit casework, coordinating structural steel by others for a unique playground climbing feature, interfacing with a zoo architect for theming and setwork, and communicating facility MEP requirements for a large, high-tech interactive museum exhibition.

    Skill Requirements

    Ability to produce accurate and coordinated technical drawings for custom “museum quality” exhibition structures and components as part of a larger exhibition/facility project team, including sole responsibility for coordinating the input of various project partners;

    Ability to collaborate with interactive exhibit engineers and technicians to incorporate their individual electronic, mechanical and audio-visual requirements and needs into exhibit cabinetry, enclosures, and custom structures;

    Ability to interface with building architects, MEP engineers, interior designers and GCs to ensure that facilities and sites are prepared to accommodate the installation of exhibitions and features;

    Ability to quickly communicate technical details across vendors, subcontractors and project partners, including developing and revising drawing details;

    Ability to represent Roto and its projects in technical coordination meetings with clients, facility A/E teams, general contractors, fabrication subcontractors, and other professionals engaged in delivering new museum/zoo/aquarium exhibits;

    Solid understanding of commercial interior fit-out and custom cabinetry methods and materials, including custom wood and metal fabrication, finishing and installations;

    General understanding and ability to implement relevant codes and ASTM safety standards across a wide range of interior and exterior applications;

    Ability to apply usability standards in accordance with the ADA and Universal design Standards, while also applying appropriate ergonomics designs for various target user groups;

    Experience navigating and referencing permit-level construction drawings and specifications for large and/or complex building projects, and providing accurate and timely information between Roto and its project partners;

    Proficient in or able to get up to speed in Sketch-up, AutoCAD, Solidworks and Adobe Creative Suite (Roto does not generally design in Revit, although we do exchange model data with project partners who do);

    Enjoyment working across multiple simultaneous projects in a highly-collaborative, fast-paced environment aimed at producing unique, one-of-a-kind public visitor experiences.
