    MEDICAL LAB TECHNICIAN

    POSITION SUMMARY: Performs applied techniques for various chemical, microscopic, immunologic and/or microbiological tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Works as a high functioning multi-tasker between all departments of the Laboratory, including Blood Bank, Hematology, Chemistry, and limited Serology and Microbiology. Receives and/or obtains specimens for laboratory analysis.  Records laboratory test results.  Performs training activities and special projects.  In the absence of a Medical Technologist, may be asked to perform additional duties in order to ensure patient care needs are met through continuous work flow of the lab.   EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: ·         An Associate's Degree in Medical Technology. ·         Certification as an MLT from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or ASCP Categorical Certification specific for the laboratory section employed in (H, C, M, BB) is required.   EXPERIENCE: ·         Must have a minimum of one (1) year clinical laboratory experience.  ·         Phlebotomy experience is preferred.     COMPETENCIES: ·         Must maintain a current and valid driver's license for travel between ECHN sites.  ·         Demonstrates efficient operation and knowledge of basic instrument theory of operation and function of components.  ·         Demonstrates efficient operation and knowledge of basic instrument theory of operation and function of components.    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: DISCLAIMER: JOB DESCRIPTIONS ARE NOT INTENDED, NOR SHOULD THEY BE CONSTRUED TO BE, EXHAUSTIVE LISTS OF ALL RESPONSIBILITIES, SKILLS, EFFORTS OR WORKING CONDITIONS ASSOCIATED WITH THE JOB.  THEY ARE INTENDED TO BE ACCURATE REFLECTIONS OF THE PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THIS POSITION.  THESE RESPONSIBILITIES AND COMPETENCIES LISTED BELOW MAY CHANGE FROM TIME TO TIME.   1.      Multi tasks in a high performing way between all Laboratory departments. 2.      Maintains competency in Blood Bank. 3.      Maintains competency in Hematology and Coagulation. 4.      Maintains competency in Chemistry. 5.      Maintains competency in Microbiology and Serology on a limited basis (gram staining, and stat Serology). 6.      Adheres to turn-around-time standards for the Laboratory. 7.      Troubleshoots instruments when necessary in accordance with instrument specific manuals. 8.      Performs section back-up procedures in accordance with specific instruments. 9.      Follows departmental policy and procedures for Quality Control. 10.  Exhibits technical expertise by assuring results are accurate with no technical data amends that would affect patient care. 11.  Makes calls promptly and documents calls to ensure test results are communicated to the appropriate healthcare provider. 12.  Informs Clinical Lab Specialist when reagents and supplies need to be ordered. 13.  Processes specimens efficiently to generate test results within the established TAT.  14.   Collects all specimens by various phlebotomy methods for all age groups within the institution in an efficient and appropriate manner.  Follows designated collectionprocedure and specimen requirements.
