    Purpose of the Position  

    This position performs routine duties associated with the operation and maintenance of mechanical systems used to support large rocket engine or article testing.

     Specific Job Duties

    • Receives technical advice from supervisor or engineer or upper level technicians; work is reviewed for technical adequacy (or conformity with instructions). 

    • May be led by higher level technician. Receives technical advice from supervisor or engineer or upper level technicians; work is reviewed for technical adequacy (or conformity with instructions). 

    • May be led by higher level technician.

    • Possess and make use of contamination control techniques required to maintain mechanical systems.

    • Mockup and fabricate new systems, as required, to support test programs.

    • Perform jobs/assignments with general engineering/technical guidance.

    • Read and understand documents such as piping schematics, operations/maintenance instructions, manufacturer’s manuals and similar documents 

    • Must be able to apply working knowledge to perform routine to moderate technical tasks related to fabrication, installation, operations, and repairs to valves, pumps, instrumentation, piping, and tubing for mechanical equipment and systems.

    • Fabricate, check out, activate, maintain, adjust, operate, troubleshoot and modify mechanical components and systems to support test programs.

    • Must be able to follow detailed procedures and instructions in performance of duties.

    • Be able to perform setup and configure equipment and systems accurately and precisely per detailed procedures in support of Activation and Testing activities

    • Be able to troubleshoot systems and apply best practices to perform routine repairs on broken equipment or mechanical components in systems

    • Read and interpret documents such as piping schematic diagrams, safety rules, operations and maintenance instructions, manufacturer’s manuals and other similar documents

    • Perform work and maintain work area in a neat, orderly, and safe manner.

    • Must have developed a vast understanding of mechanical systems and capable of demonstrating that ability to consistently perform moderate level tasks (such as laying out tubing runs, fabricating tubing, building test beds or mockups for troubleshooting components, making installations, configuring systems for test, offloading and handling of propellants, and maintaining proper clean levels for systems, accurately, etc..) with minimum oversight to be considered for advancement.  This understanding may be required to be demonstrated in the form of a test that will be administered by both S3 Management and IAM Representative(s) (as an observer only).  (Required to advance to higher classification)

    • Must be able to follow detailed procedures and instructions in performance of duties and relies on experience and judgement to plan and accomplish these assigned tasks. (Required to advance to higher classification)

    • Has full responsibility of following company vehicle and SSC site rules and guidelines

    • Performs related duties as required.

     Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent

    • Two (2) years applicable verifiable experience or equivalent civilian or military trade school   training 

    Desired Skills

    • Associates degree in Mechanical related curriculum or related field of study

    • Computer Experience

     Working Conditions

    • Must have sufficient mobility to enter all areas of test facilities; crawl, climb, etc.

    • Potential exposure to risk such as cryogenic, electrical hazards, heights, etc.

     Physical Requirements

    • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.

    • Dexterity to operate office equipment as required by the position.

    • Must meet and be able to maintain all certification requirements required for work area.

     Special Knowledge and Skills

    • Good organizational and communication skills

    • Ability to pay close attention to detail and take direction

    • Ability to work independently but follow specific detailed instructions

    • Ability to interface with various levels of personnel in a multi-cultural, team- oriented environment

     Other Requirements

    • Must be a U.S. Citizen in order to obtain required NASA badge.

    • Must be able to provide a certified Birth Certificate (with state seal), Passport, or INS Citizenship documents on date of hire (candidate will be sent home if this paperwork is not provided upon arrival on date of hire).

    • Must have the ability to communicate the English language, both verbally and written, in an effective manner.

    • Must have, and maintain, a valid driver’s license.
