    Transportation Support Professional

    DEFINITION:

    The Transportation Support Professional assists the School Driver. A priority for students with Autism, Intellectual Disability and Developmental delays is to support these students to acquire, develop, and maintain skills to direct their own personal care and foster independence. The goal is that each student is able to achieve their optimal development. The Transportations Support Professional is responsible for providing interventions and support to meet safety, health and personal care. These needs may include lifting, translocating, movement and positioning, feeding, toileting including changing of diapers.

    SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:

    Receives supervision from the Transportation Director and School Driver.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:

    · Implement instruction on transportation vehicles, based on individual goals provided by the I.E.P Team.

    · Reinforce learning with individuals or small groups during transportation.

    · Assist individuals with self-care, personal care, and mobility.

    · Assist with on-going behavior management.

    · Assist in data collection and other tasks.

    ABILITY TO:

    · Communicate effectively in a sensitive, courteous manner with students, parents, SEC staff, service delivery professionals and the general public even in difficult situations.

    · Use interpersonal skills: tact, patience, and courtesy

    · Ability to be a TEAM player

    · Keep and maintain accurate records/data.

    · Establish and maintain cooperation and effective working relationships with others.

    · Understanding and a commitment to CONFIDENTIALITY.

    · Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

    · Prepare clear and concise reports.

    · Learn, interpret, apply and explain policies and procedures.

    · Physically implement emergency behavior interventions, when trained in an appropriate program for proactive management of student assaultive behaviors.

    · Follow procedures for handling contact with sick children, dissatisfied or abusive individuals; possible contact with blood borne pathogens and/or bodily fluids; possible injury from punching, hitting, slapping, pushing and biting; exposure to profanity, obscene language and personal verbal attacks, when trained and provided appropriate materials.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    · 2 or more years desirable working within a special needs capacity

    · Must be CPR/First Aid certified within the first 3 months of employment

    · Must possess at least a high school diploma/GED

    KNOWLEDGE OF:

    · Characteristics of a range of disabilities including but not limited to autism, traumatic brain injury and emotional disturbance.

    · Student guidance principles and practices, especially as related to special needs students.

    · Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.

    · Data collection and report writing.

    · Positive behavioral intervention strategies.

    · Modern office methods utilizing computer technology and assigned software.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    · Majority of time is spent in vehicle that is heated in winter and cooled during the summer.

    · Regular exposure to unpleasant noise, gasses, fumes, dust and drafts, etc. when vehicle is in operation. Regular exposure to undesirable elements such as rain, high or low temperatures.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    · Employees in this position must possess/have the ability to: Sit for prolonged periods of time.

    · Stand and walk for short periods of time. Occasional bending/stooping; squatting/crouching. Occasional climbing 3 feet of steps into the vehicle. Occasional reaching above shoulder.

    · Occasional pushing/pulling, lifting and maneuvering objects such as wheelchairs with students with a broad range of body weights.

    · Lift and/or support/drag up to 150 pounds for short periods of time.

    · Requires simple to firm grasping to seize, hold, grasp, turn or otherwise work with hands to position students in their car/infant seats; fasten harnesses and belts; secures students to wheelchairs and car seats.

    · Hear sufficient to hear riders, receive communications on radio and hear outside noises sirens, horns, brakes, etc. that are necessary to operate vehicle safely.

    · Speak sufficiently to give instructions/commands to students, speak to parents and other staff. Visual requirement enough to monitor students.

    HAZARDS:

    · Exposure to blood-borne pathogens and bodily fluids; exposure to students being physically aggressive
