    JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

    The Test Technician is responsible for modifying, instrumenting, and installing internal combustion engines on dynamometers.  They perform required testing, provide summarized data, and communicate with other engineering groups. All work follows generally prescribed routines, under partial supervision.

     DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Remove or install engine parts
    • Review test data and provide accurate summary. Make recommendations on any inconsistences.
    • Test and diagnose mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and electronic problems with engines; inform and repair as required.
    • Develop, design, build, and validate specialized test equipment to support requirements.
    • Prepare and maintain data reports.
    • Modify existing test profiles for Dyno control, and data acquisition.
    • Propose innovative ideas that will result in incremental or dramatic improvement; commitment to continual improvement
    • Responsible for following all safety requirements.
    • Actively follow up on and complete special projects as assigned
    • Drive forklift in a safe manner, ensuring loads are stable and secure
    • Maintain a clean, organized, and secure work environment
    • Support co-workers in other departments as needed
    • Inform Manager of all noteworthy activities
    • Follow department and corporate policies and procedures

     

    REQUIRED JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    • Thorough knowledge of diesel and gasoline engines, and systems required for operation.
    • Ability to diagnose engine and component failure in a variety of circumstances, sometimes with incomplete background information.
    • Knowledge of fabrication, machining, welding and plumbing.
    • Knowledge OSHA regulations and EPA requirements.
    • Strong command of the English language, both written and verbal and be able to comprehend a variety of instructions, both oral and written.
    • Ability to communicate in a professional manner.
    • Ability to be tactful and diplomatic in challenging situations.
    • Excellent presentation as well as oral and written communication skills
    • Strong problem solving and discernment skills for various decisions.
    • Ability to maintain high level of confidentiality.
    • Working knowledge Microsoft Office programs, specifically proficiency in Excel.

     PREFERRED JOB KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    • Knowledge of C.A.N. (J1939) for communication, and data acquisition.
    • Experience in electrical and electronic test and data acquisition equipment.
    • Experience with Solidworks (or CAD), and Dyno Control software preferred.
    • Ability to travel sometimes with short notice, and able to travel internationally.

     

    EDUCATION AND TRAINING

    • Automotive Diploma or equivalent vocational training.
    • 1-3 years’ experience in gasoline and/or diesel engine diagnostics and repair.
    • Certificate/courses or experience in dynamometer operation.

     PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    • Standing, walking, sitting, stooping, bending, and reaching for extended periods of time
    • Frequent pushing and pulling of objects
    • Dexterity to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists
    • Movement by holding, turning, and grasping of objects

    • Feeling temperature, shape or texture by means of senses in skin
    • Ability to drive a car and travel by air
    • Frequent lifting and/or moving up to 50 pounds
    • Ability to see more than 20 feet
    • Ability to hear normal conversations on phone or in person
    • Ability to see color and see/read computer screen

     

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    • Work is performed engine testing environment. Conditions can be unpleasant or disagreeable such as high noise levels, exposure to heat or cold.
    • Exposure to vibration, fumes, gases, and proximity to moving mechanical parts.
    • Handling of potentially dangerous chemicals or other substances, and dangerous equipment.
    • Work performed is subject to precise measures of quality and quantity
    • While traveling, will experience noise and comfort levels common to automobiles and airplanes

     

    TOOLS, EQUIPMENT & SAFETY

    • Computer and other general office equipment
    • Eye, ear, and other appropriate P.P.E. required while working on engines, machine tools, etc.
    • Steel toed shoes are required at all times outside of office.
