    PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

    CPKC is a capital-intensive industry, and this position is responsible for management of the accounting for CPKC’s leased and owned assets (e.g., construction costs, in-servicing, retirement). This role reviews and proposes accounting treatment for complex asset additions and retirements and monitor processing of additions/retirements to ensure alignment with policies. This position also accounts and reports for all leases according with the lease accounting standard.

    POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

    • Supports alignment with and execution of the overall department and Company objectives
    • Supervises the accounting policy application and financial guidance for US and Mexico based projects and investments across all functional departments
    • Manages period-end closing (monthly, quarterly, annual) of the Property and Lease subledger, including but not limited to validation of system generated journal entries, preparation and review of journal entries, preparation and review of monthly internal reporting to support the financial statements, and reconciliations
    • Coordinates the timely processing of asset additions/retirements
    • Partners with multiple cross-functional teams to support business requirements
    • Provides timely and accurate reporting of accounting transactions and balances for quarterly and annual SEC and regulatory filings (e.g., 10-Q, 10-K, R-1)
    • Provides constructive coaching and feedback to staff in the US and Mexico as well as continues to develop staff and provides them with meaningful opportunities
    • Completes and documents appropriate controls throughout the business process
    • Assists with various other technical accounting requests (evaluation of capital and lease transactions, asset impairment review, ARO, etc.)
    • Project management skills with attention to detail and ability to deliver on time
    • Identifies process improvement opportunities and implements solutions
    • Provides support to internal/external auditors and Tax
    • Maintains the accounting and related systems for property and leased assets
    • Exemplifies CPKC Vision, Values, and Culture interactions with coworkers, business partners, customers and stakeholders

    POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

    • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
    • 5+ years of accounting experience with a minimum of 2 years leading a team
    • Knowledge of U.S. accounting standards (an asset) and/or proficiency in IFRS accounting standards
    • Management and leadership skills, including coaching, motivating, communication, team building, implementing change and improvement
    • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
    • Ability to set and meet deadlines and work independently in a fast-paced environment
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills
    • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel

    Working Conditions

    • This position has a regular full time schedule with a normal work week of Monday through Friday, working fully onsite in our corporate headquarters. There may be a need for occasional work after hours or weekends.
    • This position may require minimal travel up to 10% of the time

  • Qualifications
    • 3-5 years experience in similar service ideally within a law firm
    • Prior supervisory experience preferred
    • Prior document processing experience in a team environment
    • The ability to work independently with no supervision
    • Knowledge of Legal terminology and procedures a plus
    • Ability to produce accurate work product and strong attention to detail
    • Flexibility to work overtime
    • Bachelor's Degree in discipline related to functional work
    • Excellent knowledge Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint
    • Ability to quickly learn proprietary systems
    • Excellent written and oral communication with ability to state messages in a clear manner and anlytical skills
    • Provide premiere service to clients with a "can do" attitude
    • Experience and exposure to any of the below legal software and Office applications will be an added advantage: Microsoft Office Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Visio, Outlook, Phillips Speech Exec, Bighand Digital Dictation, Best Authority, DocXtools, Omnipage, Forte, MacPac, Numbering Assistant, Forms Assistant, Nuance, Workshare Compare, iManage Desksite or Filesite, Adobe Acrobat, Dreamweaver, E-Transcript Bundle Viewer, and Citrix Workspace
    • Experience and exposure in any of the legal word processing tasks below would be an added advantage; Creating TOAs, TOCs, inserting automated cross references, converting PDFs to Word using a variety of software, applying Word styles using macros, troubleshooting problem documents including redlines and documents containing multiple numbering schemes, style separators, cross references, and other automated fields
    • Experience redacting, revising, and bookmarking PDFs using Adobe Acrobat
