    Job Description

    The Safety Coordinator is responsible for leading and developing the facility’s occupational safety program, ensuring compliance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910 standards and minimizing workplace hazards in a USDA-regulated meat and poultry processing environment. This individual will serve as the facility’s subject matter expert on employee safety and will spearhead the development of the Safety Department as a standalone function.

    ** Major Responsibilities**

    • Develop, implement, and maintain OSHA-compliant safety policies, procedures, and programs.
    • Conduct and document regular facility inspections, hazard assessments, and Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
    • Manage compliance with Lockout/Tagout (29 CFR 1910.147), Hazard Communication (29 CFR 1910.1200), and other relevant standards.
    • Develop, implement, and conduct drills for the facility’s Fire Evacuation Plan, Emergency Action Plan (EAP), and Severe Weather protocols in accordance with 29 CFR 1910.38.
    • Interface with OSHA representatives during inspections or investigations.
    • Lead incident investigations using Root Cause Analysis (RCA) and 5-Whys methodology.
    • Maintain accurate OSHA 300, 300A, and 301 logs.
    • Ensure timely reporting of work-related injuries and illnesses.
    • Conduct safety training programs for new hires and refresher training for current staff.
    • Maintain safety training matrix and documentation.
    • Champion a safety-first culture through employee engagement and toolbox talks.
    • Track safety KPIs such as TRIR, DART rate, and Near Miss frequency.
    • Develop corrective and preventive action plans (CAPAs) based on trend analysis.
    • Participate in cross-functional safety audits and internal reviews.

    ** Qualifications**

    • Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 3 years of safety experience in manufacturing or food processing (meat/poultry preferred)
    • OSHA 30-hour General Industry Certification required (or ability to obtain within 90 days)
    • Familiarity with OSHA 29 CFR 1910 regulations
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills (English/Spanish bilingual preferred)
    • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, incident tracking tools, and training platforms
    • Strong organizational and leadership skills

    ** Preferred Qualifications**

    • First Aid/CPR Instructor Certification
    • Experience with establishing a new safety program or department
    • Six Sigma Green Belt or knowledge of lean manufacturing principles

    ** Working Conditions**

    • Work environment includes exposure to cold, wet, and loud processing areas
    • Frequent walking, standing, and climbing stairs
    • PPE required in production zones (hard hat, steel-toe shoes, hearing protection, etc.)
