About the Position
The Safety Specialist will play a key role in advancing the company's safety culture and ensuring full buy-in across all levels of the organization. Working closely with the Safety Director, this individual will support field operations, assist with compliance initiatives, and promote safe work practices for employees and subcontractors. The Safety Specialist will help maintain OSHA and DOT compliance, reinforce company and client safety requirements, and support proactive programs that drive continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Assist in maintaining the company's status within the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP).
- Support administration of the Drug Free Policy Program , including assigning and verifying random drug tests.
- Help implement new or revised safety policies and procedures as company needs evolve.
- Participate in and assist with ongoing safety training for all levels of staff.
- Attend preconstruction meetings for each project to identify hazards and assist in creating site-specific safety plans.
- Conduct regular field site visits and safety audits ; document findings and communicate results to senior management.
- Enforce safety policies, including issuing corrective actions for noncompliance.
- Investigate incidents and near misses, determine root causes, and assist in developing corrective action plans.
- Promote a culture of open communication , encouraging employees to report hazards without hesitation.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Education: High school diploma required.
- Experience: Minimum 3 years of experience in the construction industry, ideally within heavy civil/roadway/utility/site development environments.
- CHST or CSP certification
- OSHA 500 and OSHA 510
- Familiarity with heavy highway, earthmoving, utility installation, and site development projects.
- Strong understanding of OSHA and DOT regulations.
