INTERNSHIP POSITION ONLY (2018-2019) Environmental Educator Organization Name: San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (SFRPD) Division: Volunteer DivisionProgram(s): Youth Services- Interns will learn to operate and run all functions of the Youth Stewardship Program (YSP), a free environmental service learning program for teachers and educators citywide. Now in our 22nd year, YSP has served over 20,000 youth and facilitated over 134,000 hours of stewardship from youth to parks. YSP is eager to grow and create more relevant nature experiences within the city to help youth grow and become healthy, social and conscientious humans and stewards of the land. To learn more, visit our page.http://sfrecpark.org/support-your-parks/youth-stewardship-program/ Duties: * Coordinate, schedule, and co-lead in-class presentations and thematic field trips to San Franciscos city parks and natural areas for grades 2nd -12th grade * Utilize environmental education curriculum and available resources to create meaningful lesson plans * Communicate and coordinate with the Parks and Opens Space Division to design and implement age-appropriate habitat restoration projects. * Have an ongoing dialogue with teachers and educators to schedule field trips and modify established YSP curriculum to meet teachers needs when necessary. * Maintain thorough data collection and records including creating and conducting surveys, capturing media documentation, creating reports etc, to meet grant deliverables. * Support and coordinate with Volunteer Operation staff to prepare and lead Volunteer projects, meetings, outreach and special events * Support Greenager Program and large volunteer workdays as needed * Support school/work programs such as Zoo Crew, Jewish Vocational Service, and Enterprise for Youth * Weekly/Monthly SCA/AmeriCorps reporting/logs/phone conferences as needed Expectations: * Passion for parks, playgrounds, public spaces, and the natural world and for bringing park-related experiences to the public. * A high Commitment to learning about San Francisco parks and Open Spaces * Demonstrates emotional intelligence and self-awareness, inspires confidence and trust, and welcomes feedback. * Highly collaborative team player able to motivate and work with staff and partners and work cross-functionally between SFRPD departments. * Enjoys working with diverse intergenerational crowds, and strong interest in working with youth * Able to work well under pressure and adapt easily to changing situations and priorities, while exercising good judgment and staying focused on overarching goals. * Willingness to work occasional off hours and outdoors in inclement weather * Have a valid California State Drivers License or in the process of attaining one * Willingness to submit a copy of driving record if hired. * If hired, must register via the Student Conservation Association website * Commit to 40 hours per week and total 1700 hours; 10-month commitment. Desired Qualifications: * Interest and experience in Urban Agriculture and Urban Parks * Experience leading/facilitating youth through structured activities * Comfortable with and able to engage large groups of youth and or adults for 2+ hours * Passion for the environment and working outdoors and genuine interest in connecting youth to nature * Strong verbal and written communication skills * Computer literate; MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint, Internet * Previous related experience or background in biology, environmental studies, or other related subjects or strong interest and willing to learn independently and through experience * A. or B.S. in related subject (preferred not required) * Multi-lingual, ideally in Spanish and/or Cantonese * Comfortable driving large trucks or willing to learn * Ideally Bay Area resident Requirement: * Must be at least 18 years of age Training: * Interns will receive hands on training over the course of a year in San Francisco natural history and ecology, youth leadership techniques, restoration skills, program coordination, special event planning and general volunteer division operations training by way of on the field and through shadowing opportunities. * Overnight team building/training trips to be determined. Internship Term: A full 45-week term required (October 2018 -August 11, 2019) Time Commitment: 40 hours per week and total of 1700 hours per term Two positions: Monday-Friday (40 hours/wk) Two positions: Tues-Saturday (40 hours/wk) Start Date: October 8, 2018 (give or take 1 week) End Date: August 11, 2019 Compensation: $1020 monthly stipend $ 5,600 AmeriCorps Education Award upon completion of 1700 hours $600/month housing allowance Weekly communing allowance determined by SCA/AmeriCorps To Apply: * Please send resume and letter of interest by September 12, 2018. * Interviews will be scheduled weekdays between September 6th -26th.
