    The RESEARCH ASSISTANT I will be working in the Conrad Prebys Center for Chemical Genomics. The Research Assistant will be learning new technologies, as well as applying existing knowledge to procedures and bench-work.

    The Conrad Prebys Center for Chemical Genomics at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute is seeking a Research Assistant I to be a contributing member of the High Throughput Screening (HTS) team.  Under specific direction, the HTS, Automation Research Assistant I works within the HTS group to schedule and perform HTS assays as assigned.  Areas of responsibility will include high throughput screening and compound management projects in multiple disease areas, such as oncology and neurodegeneration, and research/technology initiatives.  The ideal candidate will have demonstrated hands-on experience in HTS technology, automation, and advanced laboratory equipment, including but not limited to acoustic compound transferring and robotic screening systems.

This is an exciting opportunity to directly support scientists focused on biomedical and drug discovery projects with an end goal of ultimately benefiting patients.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Assists in the execution of all High Throughput Screening projects (biochemical assays, cell-based assays, and high content screening) for the Center and the institute, including supporting preliminary stages of optimization, miniaturization, and implementation
    • Assists with the maintenance and operation of automation screen systems and laboratory instruments within the Prebys Center
    • Provides support of new equipment and technology to research scientists
    • Provides guidelines to new laboratory personnel on instrument/automation operations and standard operation procedures

    Required Skills Required Experience

    • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a biological science, chemistry, physics or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained
    • 1 year of directly related experience is preferred
    • Hands-on experience with HTS assays is preferred
    • Prior experience in a biotech or pharmaceutical setting and mammalian cell culture skills are a plus

    • Possess a meticulous laboratory approach
    • Ability to learn and use new techniques, instrumentation, and software is essential

    • Have strong time management skills
    • Demonstrate professional communication and interpersonal skills
    • Proficiency with PC Operating Platforms and Microsoft Office
