    Sanford Burnham Prebys is a preeminent, independent biomedical research institute dedicated to understanding human biology and disease, and advancing scientific discoveries to profoundly impact human health. 

    The MANAGER, GRADUATE STUDENT RECRUITMENT, RETENTION AND OUTCOMES will serve in a key role to establish our approach to create an outreach strategy to support long-term goals, develop and oversee the success of programs and resources to support the recruitment and retention of current and future graduate students, establish and nurture alumni relations, and collaborate across the Institute to identify mechanisms to ensure future sustainability. This position will report to the Director of the Office of Education, Training, & International Services / Associate Dean of Administration and Professional Development and work closely with the Associate Dean of the Admissions.

    Primary Responsibilities

    RECRUITMENT AND OUTREACH/PIPELINE ACTIVITIES

    • Develops, manages and implements recruiting strategy:
      • Identifies and attends appropriate recruiting fairs/activities
      • Manages prospective student lists and maintains communication with prospective students
      • Collaborates with Associate Dean of Admissions to collect, analyze, and present recruitment and admissions data towards advising best practices and future approaches to recruitment
    • Oversees the admissions process:
      • Serves as internal contact for prospective students
      • Facilitates student-faculty matches
      • Manages application review and candidate selection processes
      • Develops and oversees implementation of “Interview Day” program
    • Develops and manages outreach and pipeline programs and relationships:
      • Identifies appropriate institutions and organizations for outreach efforts
      • Oversees development and management of pipeline educational activities
      • Identifies additional opportunities for engaging populations that align with GSBS strategy

    STUDENT SUPPORT AND RETENTION

    • Collaborates with Associate Dean of Curriculum to utilize student learning data towards identifying support mechanisms necessary to facilitate student success
    • Collaborates with Sr Manager, Academic and Postdoctoral Programs to develop and deliver career and professional development workshops for graduate students
    • Recommends and implements best practices towards student support and retention:
      • Develops and manages resources to support students in their academic and career progression
      • Works with the Graduate Student Association to identify student challenges and implement mechanisms to address them
    • Identifies funding opportunities for the graduate school and individual students:
      • Identifies and authors grant applications to foundations and other funding sources to support programs and program activities, including outreach and pipeline programs
      • Identifies and communicates potential funding opportunities to both faculty and students
      • Develops and oversees the creation of resources for students in fellowship writing
      • Develops relationships with local biotech/pharma companies to identify student shadowing/internship opportunities
    • Oversees communications related to graduate school and graduate student activities and achievements:
      • Collaborates with the Communications department and provides graduate student and graduate program information as needed to support development of outreach, recruiting, and promotional materials
      • Develops content for and manages the internal/external GSBS webpages to meet established goals related to alumni, recruitment, sustainability, and accreditation
      • Manages social media presence to meet established goals related to alumni, recruitment and sustainability

    STUDENT OUTCOMES AND PROGRAM SUSTAINABILITY

    • Manages alumni outcomes data:
      • Collects, updates, and manages alumni career outcomes data
      • Utilizes alumni outcomes data to recommend career and professional development education and training opportunities for students
    • Establishes alumni engagement strategy:
      • Develops mechanisms to engage alumni in program activities
      • Identifies and implements opportunities to provide alumni with educational and career development resources
    • Leads collaborative partnerships with the Philanthropy department and provides program information as needed to support fundraising efforts towards program sustainability

    Required Skills Required Experience

    • Master’s degree in a biomedical science, education or other relevant discipline required and three years’ experience working in higher education OR equivalent education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained is required
    • PhD in a STEM discipline preferred
    • Experience attending recruiting fairs and outreach events required, with a preference for STEM education-related recruiting and outreach
    • Experience developing recruitment and outreach plans focused on underrepresented minority students required
    • Experience writing grants and/or funding proposals required
    • Experience working with various levels of higher education departments/programs, including deans, faculty, administration and students required
    • Familiarity with graduate school admissions processes required; experience working with graduate school admissions committee and managing the admissions timeline/processes preferred
    • Experience working with and developing STEM-focused programs for high school and/or undergraduate students preferred
    • Experience working with biomedical/STEM-related programs, specifically for pipeline development towards PhD attainment preferred
    • Experience developing and delivering professional development seminars/workshops for students preferred
