    The Sanford Burnham Prebys NCI-designated Cancer Center has an opening for the position of ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR.  The Cancer Center is an internationally recognized leading organization in cancer research and is one of only seven Basic Laboratory National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer centers in the nation. 

    The position is responsible for the administrative management, operations, financials, outreach, and planning of the Cancer Center. Partnering closely with the Center Director, the Associate Director participates in strategic discussions and initiatives and actively works towards prioritizing and executing established priorities. The Associate Director engages key stakeholders representing scientific, academic, and administrative functions both within the Institute and externally with key partner institutions and the NIH National Cancer Institute (NCI).

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Provides operational support for the management, strategic planning, and evaluation efforts of the Cancer Center and executes on Cancer Center priorities and operational plans
    • Creates and implements new programs, initiatives, and policies for the Cancer Center and leads or supports multiple projects as directed
    • Performs financial responsibilities for the Center which may include providing financial analysis, preparing and/or supporting preparation of the Center’s budget and monitoring, forecasting, and allocating expenses and resources
    • Serves as a liaison to academic departments and works closely with faculty, trainees, and other leaders to foster multi-disciplinary collaborations. This may include participating in workshops, conferences, colloquia, training programs, community outreach, etc.
    • Responsible for the administrative infrastructure, preparation, submission, and management of the NCI Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) and serves as the primary administrative liaison to the National Cancer Institute. This includes financial/budget review as needed, progress report preparation, and submission, tracking, and reporting of Cancer Center activities and renewals
    • Provides expertise and assistance in developing successful multi-investigator, large-scale grant submissions that are critical to the mission of the Center (e.g., P01s, T32s, U54s, etc.)
    • Tracks and manages all research-relevant Cancer Center components including financial operations of the Center (e.g., operating budgets, grants and contracts, and philanthropic funds), Shared Resources, Advisory Boards, training and education programs, and information technology
    • Assists the Director of the Cancer Center with faculty and staff recruitment and development as directed, including clarification of Cancer Center roles and responsibilities
    • Facilitates internal and external discussions, coordination, and advancement of interdisciplinary and interdepartmental collaboration, and translational research
    • Supports the Director and participates in activities related to the Executive Committee, internal and external advisory boards and committees, and Center retreats, events, and programs that support internal and external relationship development and organizational visibility. Supports event coordination and execution as directed
    • Works closely with relevant SBP departments including Sponsored Research, Finance/Accounting, Philanthropy, Communications, Human Resources, Procurement, Facilities, Compliance, and Shared Resources to ensure appropriate integration and alignment of priorities and activities
    • Oversees a communication strategy and marketing efforts to increase the visibility of the Center, including but not limited to traditional and social media activities

    Required Skills Required Experience

    • Bachelor’s degree in a related field required OR equivalent education, training and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been attained
    • Master's degree preferred
    • Two years’ experience in a role providing operational oversight in a related field
    • Experience managing large-scale NIH grants   
    • Previous experience supporting and administering a NIH Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) and working with NCI strongly preferred

    Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities

    • Strong attention to detail with the ability to interpret and distill complex documents and information into key themes, priorities, and actionable direction
    • Possess strong organizational skills and ability to track multiple project timelines and deliverables as well as provide direction and oversight to others
    • Demonstrate professional communication and interpersonal skills and represent the Center by building strong relationships internally and externally
    • Understanding of federal grant funding processes, agencies, and related regulations
    • Understanding of medical research environment
    • Work independently as well as in a team environment
    • Be responsible and have strong time management skills
    • Able to analyze and resolve issues of moderate complexity
    • Professional proficiency in Microsoft Office and Adobe programs
