    SBP is a preeminent, independent biomedical research institute dedicated to understanding human biology and disease, and advancing scientific discoveries to profoundly impact human health.

    SBP seeks outstanding applicants for a CRYO-EM CORE DIRECTOR in the new cryo-EM core facility of the Structural Biology Resource in La Jolla, California. This position will play a key role in establishing and managing a state-of-the-art facility that includes a Titan Krios microscope with a Gatan K3 camera, a T12, and other related equipment.

    SBP has a strong research infrastructure with outstanding core laboratories for cryo-electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography, NMR, biophysics, computational biology, and drug discovery. The Structural Biology Resource provides access to technology and expertise for biophysical, structural and structure-based drug discovery studies. The Resource maintains state-of-the-art equipment for electron microscopy, X-ray crystallography, NMR spectroscopy, and biomolecular analysis.

    The SBP campus is centrally situated on the La Jolla Research Mesa, within less than a mile of the University of California San Diego, the Salk, and the Scripps Research Institutes, and within two miles of numerous other research institutes and biotech companies. This proximity stimulates scientific exchange and interactions. The cryo-EM laboratory is located in the heart of the SBP campus, directly across from the Torrey Pines State Reserve, surf and beaches. 

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Contribute intellectually and scientifically to the direction of the facility
    • Lead the development of technical capabilities that will enable structural biology research at the institute and beyond
    • Interface with collaborators, external users, and industry partners
    • Play an integral role in structure-based drug discovery

    Required Skills Required Experience

    • Ph.D. or equivalent advanced degree in biophysical science or equivalent combination of education, experience and training
    • Experience in cryo-EM including sample preparation, data collection, and image processing

    Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities

    • Expert knowledge of cryo-EM
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
    • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
