    Dr. Crystal Zhao laboratory studies the functions of (i) RNA epigenetics and (ii) long noncoding RNAs in stem cells and in cancer biology.

    A RESEARCH ASSOCIATE I position is available in the Zhao Lab.

    The Research Associate will be involved in cell culture and molecular biology work, and other related duties and tasks as assigned. The Research Associate will be multi-tasking and work in a fast-paced environment. The most critical requirement of the candidate is to be fully capable of benchwork – learning new technologies as well as applying existing knowledge to procedures. In addition, the candidate is expected to manage a project under limited supervision.

    Primary Responsibilities

    • Generate results that contribute to lab publications and to grant submissions
    • Act under limited supervision to determine methods and procedures on new assignment and receive directions from supervisor when needed
    • Keep written record of experiments and data organization
    • Troubleshoot problems and develops solutions to technical problems of moderate to high scope using independent thinking, literature, and colleagues as resources to solve problems
    • Provide interpretation and analysis of results
    • Maintain various reagent collections, and inventories
    • Order lab supplies, as needed

    Required Skills Required Experience

    • MS degree in one of the biological sciences, chemistry or physics or BA/BS Degree in the biological sciences, chemistry, physics or a related field and a minimum of 3 years (typically up to 7 years) of relevant experience
    • Candidates with a strong background in mammalian cell culture, such as embryonic stem cells, and cell/molecular biology are preferred

    Knowledge, Skills and/or Abilities

    • Highly motivated, committed, and goal-focused
    • Proficiency in molecular and cell biology is required and a background in handling embryonic stem cells / cancer stem cells is preferred
    • Contributions to published work is highly desirable
    • Demonstrated independence, critical thinking, multi-tasking, and problem-solving skills
    • The ability to handle multiple projects and deadlines
    • Possess strong attention to detail, analytical, time management skills
    • Possess outstanding communication and interpersonal skills
    • Possess professional proficiency in Microsoft Office and knowledge in PRISM / Adobe Illustrator / cloning software is preferred
    • Ability to learn department specific software programs and equipment
