    SUMMARY:Under general direction of the Director of Safety & Security, and the Security Coordinator, the Security Guard Weekend - Swing Shift conducts a continuous roving patrol of all public areas of the Zoo, providing support and responding to a variety of incidents and emergency situations in a timely and professional manner, ensuring the Zoo is a safe environment for everyone.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES include the following:

    Security

    Continuous roving patrol of all public areas of the zoo, including the parking lot.

    Provides a visual security presence in areas of the zoo that are not actively occupied or monitored by existing daytime staff.

    Responds to observations or reports of disruptive guests or service animals on the property, and provides additional support to any zoo staff members engaged in addressing these types of problems.

    Prevents guests from going into areas of the zoo that are off limits to visitors.

    Actively monitors, makes observations and responds to a variety of guest-related issues including first aid situations, lost children, reports of fire, unauthorized persons on the property, drones violating zoo airspace and any other situation that requires intervention in order to maintain a safe and secure facility.

    Assists with crowd control efforts as needed during animal escape recovery efforts or other incidents that require a public area of the zoo to be cordoned off due to unsafe conditions.

    Provides assistance to guests as appropriate, such as directions to specific locations (public restrooms etc.), availability and hours of F&B operations and other attractions in the zoo.

    Responds to all calls for First Aid/CPR.

    Provides operational support and assistance as requested to zoo staff in a variety of situations and during Events and Special Events at the Zoo.

    Participates actively in drill exercises.

    Emergencies/Injuries

    Responds to and reports emergency calls or situations, ensuring that immediate action are taken to minimize adverse impact on the Zoo.

    Provides support to all departments by responding to incidents, emergencies and calls for additional assistance in a variety of situations.

    Reports incidents and coordinates with Director of Safety, Safety Security Coordinator and Security and Director of Human Resources (or Zoo Director in the absence of Director of Human Resources) as necessary.

    Collaborates with other departments in all cases of emergency as requested or required.

    Investigates all accidents and hazards occurring on site, takes corrective action, and completes documents to satisfy regulatory agency record keeping requirements.

    Identifies existing and potential hazards and causal factors, and initiates preventative measures to minimize risk to workers and associated costs to the Zoo in coordination with all other departments and the Director of Safety & Security.

    Safety

    Communicates safety information to staff, volunteers, guests and vendors.

    Recommends controls, procedures or programs designed to eliminate or minimize potential hazards resulting in unsafe or unhealthy work conditions, practices, or procedures.

    Administrative

    Provides comprehensive accurate records on all security related incidents and required security logs pertaining to shift.

    Be familiar with IIPP as well as all Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) sheets for all known chemicals on Zoo property.

    Staff Development

    May assist department training/job shadowing of new Safety & Security staff.

    Responds to staff questions and concerns in a timely and professional manner.

    Operations and Business

    Encourages, supports and exemplifies the highest ethical standards to ensure the continued development of the institution and the profession.

    Ensures that all federal, state, and local regulations are met such as adherence to OSHA, Cal-OSHA and all applicable federal, state, and local regulations.

    Ensures consistent productive operating practices by identifying areas for potential revenue generation, reduction of costs and more efficient procedures.

    Organization

    Responds to requests, suggestions and complaints from other departments and persons in order to maintain good will within the Zoo.

    Adheres to the Zoo’s policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Policy Manual.

    Apply and Exemplify “green” (sustainable) practices whenever possible.

    Attends monthly all-employee meetings.

    Attends bi-monthly management meetings.

    SECONDARY DUTIES:

    Greets every guest with a smile.

    Thanks guests for supporting/visiting the Zoo.

    Answers phone calls, voice mails, and e-mails promptly.

    Ensures the Zoo’s presentation standards for cleanliness and maintenance are met by keeping work areas clean, picking up trash, reporting unsafe or unsightly conditions.

    Associates with guests to assist and share information.

    Responds to all guest inquiries, complaints, and comments according to Zoo guest relation procedures.

    Maintains a clean neat appearance and adheres to the Zoo’s uniform dress code.

    Takes responsibility to stay informed about happenings at the Zoo, such as reading employee communications and emails, and attending meetings.

    Reflects the qualities outlined in the Guest Relations Statement and the Employee Pledge.

    Others duties as required.

    POSITION CRITERIA:

    To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.     Education and Experience:

    High school graduate or any equivalent occupation, which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    Must be 18 years old or older.

    License, Certification, or Preferred Qualifications:

    Successful completion of a CA Department of Justice criminal background check is required for certification as a Private Proprietary Security Officer (PPSO); certification must remain in good standing (Clear) at all times during employment.

    Valid California driver’s license with good driving record is desirable

    Training, experience or knowledge of basic locksmith skills is desirable.

    Must be First Aid / CPR / AED certified by an acceptable provider (Red Cross preferred).

    Must hold a current and Clear California Guard Card from BSIS.

    Familiarity with firearms (shotgun and bolt-action rifle) safety, operation and maintenance is desirable.

    Completion of NRA or similar firearms safety certification program preferred.

    Valid California Powered Industrial Truck (forklift) Operator License is desirable.

    Knowledge, Skills and Ability:

    Comprehensive knowledge of the policies, procedures, and equipment of the Security Department as they relate to Security and general Zoo operations.

    Knowledge of the various laws and ordinances that are related to the activities of the department, such as California safety regulations.

    Must demonstrate maturity, with effective communication skills, including the ability to manage and de-escalate tense situations.

    Must have excellent interpersonal skills.

    Must be reliable, act with integrity and professionally.

    Capacity to analyze, interpret and use sound judgment in the application of Zoo rules, policies, guidelines and regulations.

    Capacity to perform effectively and professionally under stress when confronted with an emergency, unusual or dangerous situation.

    Ability to use independent judgment and discretion in handling of emergency situations.

    Problem solving and conflict management skills, with empathetic and assertive approach as situations arise.

    Computer literacy: must be able to read emails, send emails, and enter data in reports.

    Physical Demands & Work Environment:

    Ability to sustain the physical speed and attention that are vital to the safe and effective completion of duties.

    Ability to perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials.

    Must be able to walk and remain on feet for up to 8 hours in a shift. May walk additional hours when working Events.

    Must be able to exert a minimum of 25 pounds of force and able to lift, carry, push or pull or otherwise move objects whose weight may exceed 25 pounds.

    Ability to negotiate all areas of the Zoo over a variety of terrain, including behind-the-scenes, lawns, gravel, hilltop, and attic storage.

    Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including two-way radio, guard tour system device, pepper spray dispenser, cellular phone, telephone, computer, copy machine, calculator, and a variety of vehicles.

    Adequate hearing capabilities to hear vehicles approaching, detect warning sounds, ascertain sound direction and recognize related danger.

    This position requires inspection of sites and structures to detect safety concerns, and the ability to observe any suspicious or dangerous activity.

    Exposure to extreme environmental conditions including smoke, dust, heat, cold, and wetness.

    Involves working out-of-doors in all weather conditions.
