    Job Title: Motor Vehicle Technician and Train Operator, Part Time

    Schedule: Must be available weekends and weekdays, any time between 7:30 a.m-7:00 p.m. during summer, and 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. during the rest of the year, up to a maximum of 25 hours/week: some holidays, school breaks, and some evenings for scheduled events.

    We are looking for self motivated, outgoing, and confident individuals to provide rides on our C.P. Huntington train, one of the zoo's favorite attraction. You will have an active role in delivering an educational message to all guests about animals at the zoo, their natural history, as well as our conservation efforts. When acting as a train operator, you will perform a variety of tasks such as riding the train, payment handling, passenger capacity monitoring, sanitation and disinfection efforts. As a motor vehicle technician, you will assist in maintaining the trains in excellent mechanical working conditions.

    Requirements: Must be at least 18 years old. Outgoing personality with a positive attitude and excellent interpersonal and communication skills required. Must be personable, friendly, and able to establish and enforce rules as well firmly. Must have mechanical background with some training.

    Compensation: $15.00/hour, or DOE

    Job Description

    Motor Vehicle Technician & Train OperatorReports to: Attractions Manager

    SUMMARY:

    Under the general direction of the Attractions Manager, the Motor VehicleTechnician & Train Operator ensures that the Santa Barbara Zoo C.P. Huntington narrow gauge tracks and trains, motor vehicles, and other amusement operation equipment are routinely inspected, well maintained, in safe operating conditions for public and employee use, and provides wonderful train rides to our guests. The Motor Vehicle Technician provides high quality repairs, and ensures all manufacturer and State of California maintenance requirements are met, well documented and completed promptly.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES include the following:

    Train Operator

    Supports Daily Train Inspection as conducted by Train Operators

    Operates and drives C.P. Huntington narrow gauge train of the Santa Barbara Zoo Railroad.

    Assists guests boarding train to ensure they are safely seated without being overcrowded.

    Sells tickets and collects fees from guests.

    Directs guest’s attention to points of interest and narrates the train ride

    Monitors activities to ensure adherence to rules and safety procedures to protect environment and maintain order, and manage unruly patrons

    Monitors the Train and Track conditions while operating the Trains.

    Performs sanitation and disinfection efforts throughout the shift.

    Performs routine maintenance of miniature train(s) and railroad right-of-way

    Maintains the train by keeping it clean and polished at all times

    Maintains appearance of landscaping around miniature train by cleaning the grounds and trimming plants.

    Maintains area in and around train station to ensure it is clean and litter free

    Ensures that all daily inspections forms are in order filled accurately in a timely fashion and filed away in appropriate folder/binder

    Reports any and all mechanical problems to Attractions Manager and Leads promptly

    Monitors and ensures that all coin operated kiddy rides and feeders are in working condition daily

    Collects and deposits coins to the teller on a regular basis

    Provides reads of banks after shifts, verify totals and reports any discrepancies

    Ensures that maintenance is completed on time and is scheduled regularly

    Reports to Attractions Manager any challenges with staff, equipment, guests or facility

    Assists with maintaining the train barn and train work stations organized, clear of hazards and welcoming.

    Organizes, updates and files documents pertaining to the trains and train staff

    Motor Vehicle Technician

    Ensures locomotives and coaches of the Zoo Train are safe, well maintained, and in proper working conditions to operate safely with passengers on board.

    Sets and manages locomotive and coaches maintenance schedules and executes maintenance promptly, under standards set of Chance Rides, the State of California and the Zoo.

    Orders parts, manages inventory, related documentation, and expenses with approval from manager.

    Maintains an organized and up-to-date, accessible Zoo Train maintenance log for State inspection purposes.

    Consistently maintains a clean, organized and safe work area at all times.

    Maintains the Track of the Zoo Railroad to the standards of Chance Rides, the State of California and the Zoo.

    Operates and drives C.P. Huntington narrow gauge train for testing purposes and as a public train operator as needed.

    Reads and understands operating manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings.

    Logs all work completed promptly and consistently.

    Reports all work and repair recommendations to the Attractions Manager in a timely fashion .

    ADDITIONAL DUTIES:

    Repairs and replaces damaged or worn parts on various vehicles and machines.

    Dismantles and reassembles heavy equipment utilizing hoists(?) and hand tools.

    Operates and inspects machines or heavy equipment to diagnose defects.

    Tests mechanical products and equipment after repair or assembly to ensure proper performance and compliance with manufacturers' specifications.

    Cleans, lubricates, and performs other routine maintenance work on equipment and vehicles as needed or scheduled.

    Overhauls and tests machines or equipment to ensure it is operating efficiency.

    Fits bearings to adjust, repair, or overhaul mobile mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment.

    Diagnoses faults or malfunctions to determine required repairs, using engine diagnostic equipment(?) such as computerized test equipment and calibration devices.

    Examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges.

    Completes all maintenance checks and manufacture required maintenance specified in the manufacturer owner’s manual.

    Completes diagnostics and repairs all mechanical and electrical problems promptly. Communicates in a timely fashion any major mechanical problems that can’t be repaired on grounds to Director of Guest Services.

    Adheres to Zoo’s policies and procedures, as outlined in the Employee Policy Manual and Guest Services Operations protocols.

    Other duties as assigned.

    SECONDARY DUTIES:

    Communicates and works with staff to diagnose and repair equipment.

    Greets every Guest with a warm smile.

    Adheres to and enforces all Zoo policies at all times.

    Ensures the Zoo’s presentation standards for cleanliness and maintenance are met by keeping work area clean, picking up trash while out in Zoo, and reporting unsafe or unsightly conditions.

    Ensures that work stations are presentable for tours at all time, even when not being utilized.

    Maintains a neat and clean appearance and adheres to the Zoo’s dress code policy or Technician Dress Code policy as applicable.

    Responds to all guest inquiries, comments and criticisms promptly, following the guest relation’s procedures.

    Associates with guests to share information, identify their needs and make their experience a more personal one.

    Takes responsibility to stay informed about happenings at the Zoo, such as reading employee communications and attending meetings.

    Thanks guests for their visit and continued support of the Zoo.

    Reflects the qualities outlined in the Guest Relations Statement and the “Employee Pledge” and “Core Values”.

    Applies and Exemplifies “green” (sustainable) practices whenever possible.

    At least 18 years of age

    Customer service experience preferred

    Motor Vehicle Repair Experience- at least two years

    Strong mechanical knowledge and mechanical tool knowledge

    ASE Certified in Engine Performance or equivalent

    ASE Certified in Engine Diagnostics or equivalent

    ASE Certified in Brakes and Drivetrain or equivalent

    ASE Certified in Electrical or equivalent

    Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

    Strong knowledge of hand tools and mechanical maintenance.

    Ability to follow verbal and written directions.

    Strong analytical skills and problem solving.

    Ability to interact courteously and respectfully with supervisors, fellow employees, volunteers, and our guests.

    Simple arithmetical calculations without the use of a calculator.

    Effective oral and written communication skills.

    Must have a hospitable and friendly personality.

    License, Certification, or Preferred Qualifications:

    Valid California Driver’s License and a good driving record

    Current ASE Certifications or equivalent

    SB Zoo Train Engineer Certification – Onsite training

    Forklift Certification – Onsite training

    First Aid, CPR/AED Certification – Ability to certify

    Clearance of a DOJ LiveScan Background check

    Physical Demands & Work Environment:

    Must be able to participate in operational practices: includes but is not limited to: ability to lift, push and pull 50 lbs., climb stairs or ladders, and manipulate basic tools of the job.

    Must be able to stand/walk for two continuous hours.

    Must have excellent multi-limb coordination, dynamic strength and flexibility as well as explosive strength

    Must have excellent hearing, auditory attention, and localization & speech clarity.

    Must be able to have excellent peripheral vision, visual color discrimination, depth perception, far vision, near vision.

    Involves working indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions
