    JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:

    Under general direction of the Director of Facilities & Horticulture, the Custodial Supervisor performs supervisory work involving the assignment and direct supervision of custodial employees in maintaining the cleanliness, sanitation and replenishment of supplies in all Zoo buildings, offices, walkways, furnishings and equipment, as well as building entrances and exterior offices.The Custodial Supervisor is also responsible for training new employees in proper custodial procedures for the use of manually operated tools, some electrically-powered machines, cleaning compounds, solvents and chemicals. The Custodial Supervisor also performs custodial duties as needed, and fills in shifts for custodial staff who are on leave. Ensures that the Zoo gardens and buildings meet the Zoo’s presentation standards for cleanliness.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES include the following:

    Assigns and supervises the activities of Custodial staff directly, by using both verbal and written instructions in compliance with Zoo guidelines, and using independent judgment in instances not covered by the guidelines.

    Ensures that custodial services meet the needs of the Zoo, and established custodial guidelines by scheduling work activities and adjusting workloads to compensate for scheduled and unscheduled absences, changing priorities, and special custodial projects.

    Ensures that the quality of custodial services meets established guidelines by inspecting the work of custodial staff and directing corrective measures to be taken when necessary to meet those guidelines.

    Develops an effective team of custodial staff by instructing all employees in the proper methods and use of materials and equipment for safe and efficient work performance, evaluating individual performances to meet established standards, providing performance evaluations on custodial personnel and making recommendations regarding the retention of new employees, in collaboration with Director of Facility & Horticulture and Director of Human Resources.

    Participates in staff selection process and interviews of candidates with the Director of Facilities and Horticulture.

    Enforces Zoo rules and policies regarding employee conduct by advising custodial staff of the Zoo's rules and policies on employee conduct, issuing verbal warnings, and recommending written discipline for violations in collaboration with the Director of Facility and Horticulture and Director of Human Resources.

    Ensures that custodial staff have the equipment and supplies necessary to perform custodial services by ordering and issuing supplies as needed, completing request form(s) for replacement items, and storing the supplies and equipment in a secure storage facility in an organized manner.

    Evaluates new custodial supplies and equipment by conducting testing of such items and recommending the appropriateness of their use.

    Advises Director of Facility and Horticulture on the condition of Zoo’s buildings and facilities by conducting regular inspections of those areas and reporting the results of the inspections with particular emphasis on needed repairs.

    Ensures that administrative records and reports regarding custodial staff are accurate and current by reviewing employee time cards and monitoring employee absences, in collaboration with the Director of Facility and Horticulture.

    Performs hands on, daily custodial duties as needed in support of the department.

    Provides continuity of custodial services under emergency conditions or unique circumstances by performing custodial duties directly related to the emergency conditions or as the situation dictates.

    Provides continuity of supervision and leadership for Custodial staff in the absence of Director of Facility and Horticulture.

    Performs periodic inventories of tools, equipment and supplies.

    Organizes and maintains custodial areas.

    Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of various cultures or backgrounds.

    Assures practices adhere to sustainable practices guidelines.

    Answers phone calls, voice mails and emails in a timely manner.

    Adheres to the Zoo’s policies and procedures as outlined in the Employee Policy Manual.

    Attends monthly all-employee meetings.

    Remains competent and current by attending training and/or courses required by management.

    Other duties as assigned.

    Guest Relations

    Greets every guest with a smile.

    Thanks guests for supporting/visiting the Zoo.

    Ensures the Zoo’s presentation standards for cleanliness and maintenance by keeping work areas clean, picking up trash, reporting unsafe or unsightly conditions.

    Associates with guests to assist and share information.

    Responds to all guest inquiries, complaints, and comments according to Zoo guest relation procedures.

    Maintains a clean neat appearance and adheres to the Zoo’s uniform dress code.

    Answers phone calls, voice mails and emails in a timely manner.

    Takes responsibility to stay informed about happenings at the Zoo, such as reading employee communications and attending meetings.

    Education and Experience:

    High school diploma, GED or equivalent

    Two years paid experience in purchasing and inventory control

    At least 2-3 years of experience in custodial services, two of which must have been supervisory, with knowledge of cleaning procedures, equipment and supplies.

    Knowledge, Skills and Ability:

    Ability to supervise and motivate a team successfully.

    Knowledge of Spanish a plus.

    Physical Demands & Work Environment:

    Requires the ability to access all areas of the facility.

    Ability to negotiate the zoo work environment including behind-the-scenes, lawns, gravel, and hilltop.

    Must be able to participate in operational practices; including climb stairs, manipulate tools, and stand/walk for up to two continuous hours.

    Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including electric cart, office equipment and two-way radio.

    Requires the ability to lift and carry custodial supplies and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds on a frequent basis, and 20 or fewer pounds throughout the shift.

    Requires a full range of physical motion in order to operate manual and electrically-powered cleaning equipment and machines.

    Occasional exposure to chemical cleaning solutions and pesticides.

    Involves working out-of-doors in all weather conditions.

    Ability to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly push, pull or otherwise move objects.

    The ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without 'giving out' or fatiguing.

    The ability to bend, stretch, twist, or reach with your body, arms, and/or legs.

    The ability to quickly move the hand, hand together with arm, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.

    Requires the ability to inspect the cleanliness of facilities and areas that may only be accessible by climbing ladders or stairs, bending, reaching on top of partitions, cabinets, bookcases and ledges, moving furniture, supplies, or equipment.

    Must be able to move throughout assigned areas, as work is performed indoors and out-of-doors.

    Must report to work as scheduled when the Zoo is closed due to natural elements or other unusual circumstances, based on manager inquiry.

    Annual TB Test clearance is required.
