The Santa Barbara Zoo is located on 30 acres near the ocean in Santa Barbara, CA. It was built on the site of what was known as the Child Estate. The zoo has been ranked numerous times as one of the nation's best small zoos. As an HR Specialist: Recruiting and Onboarding, you'll play a crucial role in attracting, retaining, and supporting a high-performing team committed to our mission.
This is a full-time, Regular, Non-Exempt position.
Schedule: Tuesday - Saturday, with Sunday/Monday off, any time between 8:00 AM and 5:30PM
What You'll Be Doing:
Under the direction of the Director of HR, and in collaboration with hiring managers, you will be responsible for coordinating and engaging in many aspects of the HR function:
· Spearhead end-to-end recruitment processes to identify and attract top-tier candidates.
· Innovate recruitment strategies to tap into diverse talent pools and stay ahead in the competitive market, and participate in local Career Fairs.
· Ensure a world-class candidate experience from the first interaction to onboarding, reflecting our commitment to a people-first approach, setting team members up for success in a fun and professional manner.
· Collaborate in driving a positive organizational culture through engagement surveys, recognition programs, events, and team-building initiatives.
· Coordinate and participate in Diversity, Equity, Access, and Inclusion (DEAI) initiatives to create an inclusive workplace.
· Act as a brand ambassador, show-casing the Santa Barbara Zoo culture and values throughout the recruitment journey.
· Enhance and implement seamless orientation and onboarding programs that immerse new hires in our culture and set the stage for rapid success.
· Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure a holistic and engaging onboarding experience.
· Utilize analytics to track key recruitment and onboarding metrics and provide insights for continuous improvement.
· Stay ahead of industry trends to implement best practices and maintain a competitive edge.
· Help develop, and coordinate employee wellness programs, fostering a healthy and supportive environment.
· Provide benefits education, ensuring employees are supported during Open Enrollment in collaboration with our HR and Payroll Associate.
· Maintain accurate and up-to-date employee records, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations.
· Manage uniform inventory and distribution, including ordering and coordinating laundering services.
· Support HR initiatives such as employee engagement and retention programs, process improvement projects, and recognition efforts.
· Embrace a flexible, upbeat "can-do attitude" while multitasking successfully in a fast-paced environment.
· Provide excellent staff and guest experiences.
· Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
· B.A. or B.S. with coursework in business administration, psychology, HR, or 4+ years of related experience.
· Minimum two years of professional experience in HR, recruiting, event coordination or related field.
· Experience in a zoo, aquarium, museum, or nature center setting is a plus.
· Proven experience in full-cycle recruitment and onboarding processes.
· Familiarity with ATS, Recruiting, Onboarding, LMS, Benefits, and HRIS systems/platforms. Experience using Paylocity a plus.
· Excellent command of written and spoken English; Spanish is a plus.
· SHRM certification or HR Certificate is a plus.
· Basic knowledge of CA Labor Laws preferred.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
· Ability to work Saturdays, occasional holidays, and evenings for training sessions and events.
· Ability to spend prolonged periods remaining at in a stationary position about 70% of the time, at a computer
· Ability to actively participate in Career fairs and and occasional lifting of up to 30 pounds.
· Ability to spend prolonged periods traversing Zoo grounds on a weekly basis for tours and ability to communicate and converse with groups. Comfortable navigating varied work environments, including behind-the-scenes, hills, lawns, and gravel.
· Ability to keep uniform area stocked and organized, operate standard office equipment, two-way radios, audio-visual equipment, electric carts, and name tag printers.
