Job Description
Operating Engineers install piling and tiebacks, for excavation support. Main skills required include safely and productively operating drills, cranes and excavation equipment as necessary for the installation of sheeting and shoring.
Operating Engineers usually work eight-hour days; however, overtime may be necessary on Saturdays or night shifts. Workers may be asked to travel. When that happens, Operating Engineers are compensated with shift pay and travel allowances. Minimum Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) required includes hard hats, gloves, eye protection and steel-toed boots. In addition to operating machinery, operating engineers may be responsible for handling, hoisting or moving objects, repairing and maintaining mechanical equipment, or running large pumps or air compressors.
