Mercyhurst Preparatory School is a premier Catholic high school in Erie, Pennsylvania. Located on a 7.25-acre campus, it is the region's only secondary school offering the International Baccalaureate program. We are seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and qualified School Counselor to support the academic, emotional, and social development of our students in a dynamic and nurturing preparatory school environment. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with students, parents, faculty, and administration to promote student well-being and success from early childhood through the preparatory years.
Key Responsibilities
- ****Provide individual and group counseling to students to address academic, emotional, and social challenges.
- Develop and implement proactive programs that support student mental health, character education, and personal development.
- Identify students in need of additional support and provide appropriate interventions or referrals to external professionals.
- Support students with goal setting, time management, and study skills development.
- Assist in academic planning and course selection in collaboration with academic advisors or classroom teachers.
- Monitor academic performance and intervene with appropriate support strategies as needed.
- Respond to student crises and urgent mental health issues with professionalism and care.
- Serve as part of the school's crisis response team and maintain appropriate documentation.
- Partner with parents/guardians, teachers, and administrators to support student growth and well-being.
- Maintain strict confidentiality in accordance with school policy and ethical guidelines.
- Participate in student support team meetings, IEP/504 planning, and faculty professional development sessions.
- Design and deliver age-appropriate workshops and classroom guidance lessons on topics such as bullying prevention, conflict resolution, stress management, and social skills.
- Contribute to the school's advisory program and character education initiatives.
**Requirements
**
- Master's degree in School Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
- State licensure and/or certification as a school counselor (or eligibility to obtain).
- Minimum of 2–3 years experience in a school counseling role, preferably in a preparatory or independent school setting.
- Experience working with students in both one-on-one and group settings across a variety of grade levels.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a high degree of emotional intelligence.
- Knowledge of child and adolescent development, mental health concerns, and current best practices in school counseling.
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary educational team.
