School Counselor (PreK-8th grade) Job Description
The Lower/Middle School Counselor supports the emotional, social, and developmental well-being of students in grades PreK–8. Through individual and group counseling, proactive programming, and collaborative communication with families and faculty, the Counselor helps foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment. This role is split between the Lower and Middle School campuses, requiring consistent on-site presence and flexibility. The Counselor reports to the Director of Student Support Services (or appropriate administrator) and serves as a key partner in promoting student growth and school culture.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree in Counseling, School Counseling, Social Work, or a related field is required
- State licensure or certification as a school counselor, LPC, or LCSW preferred
- 3+ years experience in a school setting preferably with both lower and middle grade levels
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Student Counseling & Support
- Provide individual and group counseling to students on social-emotional issues, peer relationships, conflict resolution, and general well-being.
- Observe, assess, and respond to student needs in collaboration with teachers and staff.
- Help students develop skills in emotional regulation, resilience, self-advocacy, and positive social interactions.
- Meet with students as needed and maintain appropriate documentation while upholding confidentiality standards.
Family Communication & Coordination
- Communicate regularly with parents to gain consent for counseling services, provide updates, and support family involvement in student development.
- Serve as a resource to families, connecting them with external services (e.g., therapists, evaluators) when additional support is needed.
- Partner with families during times of transition or challenge to offer guidance and tools for success.
Faculty Collaboration & Campus Integration
- Collaborate with teachers and staff to support classroom behavior, emotional development, and the implementation of appropriate interventions.
- Participate in student support meetings and maintain an active presence in school life to build trusting relationships with students and colleagues.
Administrative and Programmatic Responsibilities
- Assist with the coordination of Lower School academic competition groups and teams.
- Support the administration of ERB and PSAT testing in Middle School, including communication, scheduling, and logistics.
- Collaborate with the Upper School Counselor to meet with 8th grade students and their families to support the transition to Upper School and freshman course scheduling.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of services provided, and ensure documentation is up to date.
- Support and participate in school-wide events, meetings, and trainings.
Campus Presence
- Work at the Lower School campus on designated days and the Middle School campus on designated days, with flexibility to respond to student needs on either campus as they arise. ****
