  • Responsibilities

    School Year Educators assist in growing and delivering our successful environmental education programs. School Year Educators serve as integral to our education team; report to the center's Director of Education; and work closely with all center staff. They maintain positive and friendly working relationships with the public, volunteers, and local/regional community organizations and school groups.

    The School Year Educator position is full-time and seasonal, beginning on September 9, 2026 and ending May 26, 2027. There is a winter break in December and January. Some weekends and evenings required.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    • Lead field-based and classroom environmental education programs including on Pickering Creek's 450 acres, at schools, and at partnering sites for pre-K, elementary, middle and high school students
    • Collaborate with other staff to prepare and lead public, community and volunteer programs for families, adults and youth
    • Assist with the care of buildings and grounds including weekly trail and habitat maintenance
    • Provide care for program animals including feeding and animal tank maintenance
    • Fulfill weekly administrative tasks alongside organization leadership
    • Serve as a role model naturalist and environmental steward for students, teachers, community and public audiences
    • Work closely with other staff to plan and implement programs
    • Contribute to Center's public communications including social media and email digest

    QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Enjoys hiking, birding, ponding, fishing, seining, planting and leading games for children of all ages
    • Has at least one year of experience teaching or working with children in an educational or recreational setting. Experience may be achieved by combining time from multiple positions or roles.
    • Has interest and experience in biology, education, environmental education, environmental science or a related field
    • Is committed to the conservation of birds, other wildlife and habitats
    • Possesses excellent interpersonal, written and communication skills
    • Is an enthusiastic team player
    • Maintains a professional, friendly manner
    • Is self-motivated, with the ability to work with minimal supervision
    • Proficiency with speaking and writing in Spanish a plus
