    What you’ll do

    Become part of an iconic brand that is set to revolutionize the all-electric pick-up truck & rugged SUV marketplace. 

    The Chief IP Counsel will report to the General Counsel and will play a critical strategic, business and legal role in helping to identify, maintain, protect, use and monetize Scout’s intellectual property (IP) portfolio.

    The essence of this role is to:

    • Lead, supervise and manage all matters pertaining to Scout’s IP portfolio
    • Lead the design and implementation of Scout’s worldwide IP strategy, including the identification and protection of Scout’s patents, trademarks, trade names, trade secrets and brand
    • Provide legal and strategic counseling to Scout’s management team, strategy, engineering and other teams with respect to IP creation, development, protection, litigation and monetization
    • Partner with and train the R&D and product teams to support the development of new products and technologies and harvest inventions
    • Analyze the patent landscape (including patentability, non-infringement, invalidity, and freedom-to-operate), and provide legal and strategic guidance to the relevant business and engineering teams in the development, marketing and sale of Scout’s products
    • Draft, comment and advise on policies, procedures, forms, contracts and agreements relating to IP, including IP generation, identification and licensing
    • Lead the negotiation of, and provide legal and strategic advice to the business and legal teams with respect to, IP terms and agreements 
    • Engage outside counsel and work together with them to draft and file appropriate documentation with U.S. and international patent and trademark authorities and assist in the drafting and negotiation of material agreements

    LOCATION & TRAVEL EXPECTATIONS: The responsibilities of this role require attendance at in-person meetings and events from time to time, including in-person meeting with internal clients as needed. Applicants should be based in the U.S. and able to convene in person with Scout colleagues and be able to travel to participate in negotiations and other meetings on behalf of the company. Applicants hired within driving distance of Scout Motors corporate office in Northern Virginia are invited to work from the office. 

    What you’ll bring 

    • J.D. from an accredited law school and member in good standing of the bar in at least one state in the United States
    • Minimum 15 years of legal experience, with a strong preference towards a combination of law firm and in-house experience (ideally manufacturing and technology sectors)
    • Significant experience developing worldwide IP strategy and portfolios
    • Experience and desire to play a key leadership role in a growing legal team that will provide strategic and business advice in addition to legal counseling
    • Strong leadership, communication, interpersonal, time-management, and organizational skills
    • Keen attention to detail
    • Ability to work well across departments and strengthen company culture through effective collaboration
