    Position Summary

    The Security Specialist is responsible for supporting the safety, security, and well-being of residents, staff, visitors, and property owned or managed by the Sanford Housing Authority. The position focuses on crime prevention, community engagement, policy enforcement, incident response, and coordination with local law enforcement and emergency services. The Security Specialist serves as a visible presence throughout Authority properties and works to promote a safe and professional environment within public housing communities.

    Essential Duties and Responsibilities

    • Conduct routine patrols of housing developments, administrative offices, parking areas, and Authority-owned properties.

    • Monitor and report suspicious activity, safety hazards, criminal behavior, lease violations, and disturbances.

    • Respond to incidents involving residents, visitors, contractors, and employees in a timely and professional manner.

    • Prepare detailed incident reports, daily activity logs, and documentation related to investigations and enforcement actions.

    • Assist with access control procedures for Authority facilities and special events.

    • Coordinate with local law enforcement, fire departments, EMS, and other public safety agencies when necessary.

    • Support emergency preparedness initiatives and assist during emergencies, natural disasters, evacuations, or critical incidents.

    • Monitor surveillance cameras, alarm systems, and other security equipment.

    • Provide conflict resolution and de-escalation services when dealing with disputes or disruptive behavior.

    • Enforce Sanford Housing Authority policies, procedures, and safety regulations.

    • Participate in resident outreach programs, safety meetings, and community engagement initiatives.

    • Assist management with investigations involving vandalism, trespassing, theft, fraud, or property damage.

    • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information and records.

    • Provide professional customer service to residents, staff, and visitors.

    • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.

    Minimum Qualifications

    • High school diploma or GED required.

    • Associate degree in Criminal Justice, Public Administration, Homeland Security, or related field preferred.

    • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in security, law enforcement, military, corrections, public safety, or related field preferred.

    • Valid North Carolina driver's license with acceptable driving record.

    • Ability to successfully complete background investigation and drug screening.

    • Prior experience working in public housing or community-oriented policing environments is preferred.

    • A North Carolina Armed license is required

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Knowledge of security operations, patrol procedures, and emergency response practices.

    • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

    • Ability to prepare accurate and professional reports.

    • Strong interpersonal and conflict-resolution skills.

    • Ability to remain calm and make sound decisions during emergencies or stressful situations.

    • Working knowledge of surveillance systems, access control systems, and radio communications.

    • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.

    • Knowledge of fair housing principles and sensitivity to diverse populations.

    • Proficient in basic computer systems including Microsoft Office and report management software.

    Physical Requirements

    • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time.

    • Ability to patrol indoor and outdoor areas in various weather conditions.

    • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.

    • Ability to respond quickly during emergencies.

    • Ability to operate Authority vehicles and security equipment safely.

    Work Environment

    The Security Specialist works in residential communities, administrative offices, and outdoor environments. The position may require evening, overnight, weekend, holiday, and emergency response assignments.

    Preferred Certifications

    • CPR/First Aid Certification

    • Crisis Intervention Training (CIT)

    • FEMA Incident Command System (ICS) Certifications

    • North Carolina Private Protective Services certification (if applicable)
