    Job Description

    MSNBC is looking for a writer with experience in commentary/perspective writing and original reporting with investigative experience preferred for a Segment Producer role on Velshi.

    This position is represented by the Writers Guild of America East.

    Responsibilities:

    • Pitch, write and produce reported stories, commentary-style essays, and investigative pieces for Velshi, a three-hour, twice weekly news & analysis show in the voice and style of Ali Velshi.
    • The Segment Producer must have interest and extensive knowledge of American politics and history, foreign policy and global affairs, and the economy and must be able to adapt their writing style to fit the host’s voice.
    • The Segment Producer will also be called upon to cover breaking news - quickly pivoting and adapting on a tight deadline.
    • The Segment Producer’s duties for each assigned piece will include: writing, communicating story development with the Senior Producer, identifying video, sound, and graphic elements, being in the control room during the live segment airing, and writing social copy after the show.

    Basic Qualifications:

    • Must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
    • Strong writing skills and knowledge of American politics, American history, global affairs, health policy, and the economy.
    • Strong research and reporting skills; investigative reporting experience preferred.
    • 5 years of experience in some form of journalism required (i.e. cable or network news, website, newspaper).
    • Candidate should be able to deal with daily script deadline pressure.

    Desired Qualifications:

    • Able to develop story ideas, research, and plan segments.
    • Ability to "book" guests, and work with graphics and video elements.
    • Exceptional editorial skills: Ability to recognize stories with high potential for provocative, compelling television.
    • Knowledge of current events, politics, economics, global affairs.
    • Wide-range reader of news, including op-eds.
    • Proficient in both tape and desktop editing.
    • Edit room experience and breaking news experience is preferred.

    Salary range: $93,000 - $110,000
